Verisign Hijacking traffic!!

and someone has already filed a lawsuit! details here: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030919/wr_nm/tech_verisign_lawsuit_dc_1

yeah, that's quite a plan by them to hijack every mis-spelling on the internet.

Obviously it has been working, if their traffic has increased over 1000%   I am not alone in thinking that this is a little "unethical" at the very least!!

what can you really expect out of these guys?

They expect this will result in 20 million unique visitors per day! I think their motivation is money!

Out of those 20 million people how many do you think can be conned into coming back? (Setting the sitefinder as their homepage, etc). By the times the courts work it out, NetSol will have a ton of misguider search users.

Maybe they will start marketing the traffic now....

you know what's funny? this wasn't exactly a technological miracle for them either. they added a wildcard * and VOILA! 20 million users!

I found a site that is obviously sick of this happening....kinda interesting. http://safetobuy.com/

i checked that site out. i agree with the guy about "verislime". :)

Check it out.. hehe I think the VeriSlime idiots (not the word I wanted to use but... we should stay PG! :D) are in trouble!!... Probably not a good idea to piss off ICANN huh?... Found on http://www.slashdot.org [i:c626af1065]Your Rights Online: ICANN Gives VeriSign 36 Hours to Pull Sitefinder Froomkin writes "ICANN this morning announced that it sent VeriSign an ultimatum: pull sitefinder by tomorrow evening or we'll sue. Details and links to discussion of the contractual and legal issues in ICANN Throws Down the Gauntlet to VeriSign on Sitefinder at ICANNWatch." [/i:c626af1065] http://www.icann.org/correspondence/twomey-to-lewis-03oct03.htm http://www.icann.org/announcements/advisory-03oct03.htm Verisign "Blinked" http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/031003/sff057_1.html

i guess verisign lawyers must not like their chances. i don't think they would have pulled that site unless they are really afraid.

 Couldn't agree with you more.... How did you like the statement... "The service has been well received by millions of Internet users who appreciate getting navigation tools as opposed to the 'dead end' of an error message," added Lewis. Uhhh.. I don't THINK so... Instead of DNS requests failing as they should have... or mail bouncing when it needed to... It was being sent to VeriSign, causing systems to incorrectly interpret failures and successes... (Can imagine some of the personal emails that went out?? )

right. all the mis-directed emails in the world sent to the folks as VeriSlime. wonder what they did with it?

You might like this:http://www.veri-sign.com/

I dunno.. but add up our spam emails we get daily.. and imagine what could be done with those!! ;-) I wonder if any have resigned to start their own Home Businesses.... How many have a much more [i:2b4b5f8cbb]satisfying[/i:2b4b5f8cbb] life.... etc... etc...

 Searchy.. You're right.. that is really good!

Their are definitely some issues here. Most importantly, how does VeriSign "own" the default internet traffic? It sort of points out the obvious fact that that company is in a bit too important of a position. I can honestly say I have had several unpleasant experiences with that Company. They have always been able to rely on the fact that they're a monopoly.

I've so far successfully avoided any major contact with them personally.. But several of my friends and clients have had horrid experiences...Ones that are best left unsaid by me.. I agree.. their position is way to high up since they were able to take over the net like that... after ICANN tho.. I wouldn't count on anyone else trying it anytime soon

I think they have really hurt themselves with this move. They look bad.

VeriSign is selling Network solutions... To a company that basically fixes broken companies... Oopsie

network solutions has been a giant business failure. they could have leverage their monopoly much better than they have, but instead they lost billions.

my GOD! i just read the terms of that deal. they bought them for $16 billion in June 2000 and sold them today for $100 million of which only 60 million was cash! i want to give my nest egg to these guys to invest!

I'd do it too LOL... *sneaks under my mattress for my nest egg* ... Its due to hatch in about 1 week :P Seriously tho.. I know Some serious cash going around there... but at least verisign wont be in control of the world now... maybe network solutions might be decently run for a change.. its HORRIBLE trying to transfer and change information with them.... Let alone the money they've charged us .. one year they made us pay for a domain 14x saying they were never paid.. even tho we gave them receipts, etc... if we didn't pay them again.. we were taken down...

yeah. they haven't done the world any favors. maybe now they will be forced to shape up or ship out.
