IBM to Crush Google!

IBM shouldn't be discounted then. Do they have a launch date? I noticed the article was from a while back.. I work on a ThinkPad and absolutely LOVE it. I had a Toshitba before, and I will never own one of those again :)

What will happen with IBM, is many small search engines will use their data services (buy them wholesale) and add value to them or their own flavor to provide the end user with the final product. So IBM acts as the back end for other search retailers. http://www.almaden.ibm.com/webfountain/ I do look for them to start their own web search tool soon. When it happens you will know about it, they are already crawling the net with their bots.

Search is the hottest field in tech right now. I bet we see a lot of new players. I also expect big things from Amazon. Their reach is top 5 right now.

wow, IBM now? this is getting intense!

Amazon are already running a beta site called www.A9.com Clare

Looks like they're using Google results.

Yes, that is why is it worthless to use. Maybe one day they will use their own results, you know Alexa has their own spider, Amazon bought Alexa a couple of years ago. I think they are simply using Google for the money (ADWORDS) until they develop their own search engine, also they redirect traffic into the Amazon.com website from A9, so it serves a couple of purposes right now.

Yeah, my site has been spidered monthly by the IBM robot, something like IBM_Planetwide. But right now this seems to be just sucking bandwidth without any return because their search isn't available as far as I know. At least I've gotten no traffic from them... When and where are we going to see this new contender?

IBM is quiet now, but again I think they will act as a wholesale source (back end data provider) for smaller resellers who will add value to the data by adding their own flavor to it. Also they are serving a 8 Billion dollar maket, major corporate search, so large corporations will use the IBM WebFountain to consolidate different sources of information (corporate databases) with online and private databases.

Does IBM have a web portal? Don't think they are going into actually running a web site like MSN or Yahoo. Probably just backend supplying search results.

ibm could care less about search. they wont put any effort into it.

Edwin, did you really read any of the articles linked in this thread? IBM was in search when Larry and Sergey were in grade school

ibm is known for blowing opportunities. remember microsoft?

I say we just build our own search engine. Become the next google. At least we wont have problems getting rankings.
