Mad Cow. To drink milk or not?

I have some real problems with the food industry in general, when profits come before the health of the customers and growth hormones and selective breading rob the diversity of the gene pool, then you have problems. When America was founded the average weight of cattle was 350 lbs. now it is about 1,500 lbs through selective breeding and growth hormones mixed into the feed. Mad cow was started by men who mixed in ground dead sheep (bone meal, animal protein) into feed. This same type of rendered animal protein (all types of carcasses mixed up at rendering plants) is used in dog food, cat food and many other products that we use everyday. Now we have learned that hunters have spread the Mad Cow to the deer population by taking the banned cattle feed out to attract deer when they hunted them. When this thing hit the UK (mad cow) they had to kill millions of cattle, the US for years claimed that we did not have the problem in the US, but now we can not export our cattle since the "so called only case" was discovered. Now the animal protein feed has been outlawed but other countries still do not want US beef since our testing is not any good. I have much more to add and will post some URL's when I get back to Florida. Lets hear from other members first, enjoy your hamburgers folks. I still eat meat and drink milk, that does not mean I approve of the farming in this country, but I will say more about this as I hear from others.

I can say that organic meat tastes better than meat that you buy in a supermarket. I try to stay away from low grade meat (like the stuff served at McDonald's) if I can. I have to wonder how "good" it can be? Anthony, are you a member of a watchdog group/groups?

i dont drink dairy. anthonycea is the ralph nader of the google boards.

Brigid, cattle were created by God to be grazing animals (eat grasses and herbage, look up grazing in the dictionary) but we have started feeding them grains mixed with vitamins and drugs and excess hormones, in addition to other ground up carcasses (animal protein). The meat industry is guilty of saving the blood from the animals killed and feeding it as a substitute for milk to calves. How sick are the cattle farmers who want only weight at the auctions to make filthy lucre. So I guess for money (to make money) we have corrupted our own foods. Wait until you hear what the government does on seeds, we will see how the thread progresses. 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

Brigid, the only dogs I have watched are the 3 that I lost in the last 3 years, the first got hit by lightning, the last two were run over by cars. The only watchdog group I belong to are the one's that keep Edwin, Oneill and BK in line and honest. That is more than enough work for me

All of it scares me. Probably the less you know, the better off you are. I didn't know that they feed blood. Yuck. I'm sure it is all horrifying. Kraft foods is owned by MO, now Altria.. I find it hard to believe the biggest tobbacco company has the consumers best interest at heart. Go figure.. (This has nothing to do with food, but while we're talking about "how things are done" First Energy is a crap company that has their head up their a**)

please tell me none of those dogs were named "lucky"!

Awww.. I'm sorry to hear that happened. Struck by lightning? Poor poochies  Are you going to get another dog?

I would rather get hit by lightning and die instantly verses a slow death by getting run over by a truck. One of the dogs was an English Bulldog, he was the best dog I ever had and I have had good ones, Dobermans, German Shepards, but this guy was the greatest. He happened to somehow jump in front of my own truck in my own driveway and was run over by..... guess who is sorry forever? Edwin is right, I do need to get my ________ together, I take the blame for all of those animals losing their lives.

oh man :( i am gonna gas myself now.

anthony cia please fix your broken avatar! its making me crazy!

i think i'll go for a fag and a glass of milk and think about it

A very wise old "black man" I was having a discussion with told me the following in a story. I mentioned to him that the world was screwed up, then he mentioned to me that there is nothing wrong with the world, it is the people in the world that are screwed up, it is what they do that they were taught wrong that caused them to go wrong and live the wrong ways. Well this same lesson from this wise man can be applied to farming, there is nothing wrong with farming or meat or milk. It is the way the farmers farm that is wrong. Nothing wrong with Beef, there is something wrong with the way men produce Beef. There is nothing wrong with milk, but the way we produce the product is wrong. If men would produce beef and milk and plants the way they were ment to be produced we would not have any problems. It is mans intervention that ruins the product through gene altering, addition of drugs and growth hormones that are the cause of obesity and drug resistant bacteria that will cause future health problems.

true enough. dairy cows are on steroids and they are pregnant all the time so they produce 500% the normal amount of milk!

The FDA (food and drug administration) and the USDA are the worst offenders since they both cover for the food industry and promote practices that are designed to produce quantity, not quality. Everyone should do a simple keyword search, use the keyword search "organic foods", then you will see some truth on these issues. Next do a keyword search on "organic farming", then you will see more truth. 58 nations have banned export of USA farm products, the above agencies are responsible for this by promoting bad practices to farmers. Monsanto is responsible for genetic engineered seeds that can not reproduce themselves, the government also promotes this seed from this company. A farmer can not sell seeds to his fellow farmer, it is outlawed, so farmers must buy seeds from government controlled companies. The Monsanto altered seed is resistant to "roundup", roundup kills all other plants beside the "Monsanto roundup resistant" seeds that are produced by Monsanto, Monsanto also manufactures "roundup" to kill all other plant life other than the Monsanto altered seed. Monsanto has farmers using both products (altered seed and roundup) in the rain forests in South America, farmers using Monsanto products are destroying record numbers of acres of rain forest to grow Monsanto soybeans in rain forests that provide plant life that could provide natural medications and chemical compounds that can not be produced by man. So the two work hand in hand, Monsanto destruction of the rain forest to grow SOY that is used as a raw material for many products leading to the complete loss of the rain forest that is of more value than the dammed SOY that is produced. Maybe Monsanto has a grand plan to destroy nature so they can in turn make more man made chemicals to replace those produced by the rain forest that they continue to destroy by their insane products. Everyone eats their corn that is altered everyday, does anyone have any idea how much of your food has corn derived product in them?

I really, truly hate the idea of eating cloned food, whether it be animal or vegetable.

That is some interesting information, Anthony. The thing about man growing everything the "right" way is that the population of this country (and others) never stops growing..

Your statement about populations growing in general is correct, but that is because of lack of war, overgrowth of cities and modern construction of buildings. But at the same time we are destroying the rain forests, creating dumps of waste (nuclear waste that we can not dispose of safely) in landfills that are toxic to future generations. Africa is losing millions of people to AIDS and starvation and war right now as the terrorists are moving there as we chase them from IRAQ and other places. They are going through small villages on camels and burning poor folks entire villages up so they can move in, killing or forcing them to flee into the desert to die. Over population and pollution are destroying the oceans that all life depends on, even whales beach themselves because of man made pollution.

C-SPAN is discussing MAD COW right now on TV , Good timing Brigid!

I was reading that Africa has more than 18 million children that are orphans because of the AIDS epidemic. That is a lot of kids with no parents living in poverty and very little hope for a bright future. What time is that show on? I normally catch COPS and AMW on Saturday nights..

The world is a tough place to live.

But it makes you realize how lucky you actually are when you hear about these stories. The hardships in life that I have are very minor compared to those of others.. for that I feel fortunate every day..

I think about going vegan all the time. But I just never do it. It seems like it would be tough to quit eating meat.

Meat makes the world go round. Its the best source of protein out there.

I used to eat loads of natural foods until I discovered that most people die from natural causes.

you can get milk without all that stuff done to it. organic no-hormone milk.

I have never had organic milk before. How ya doing Ricky? Life treating you good I hope... **crossing fingers**

[quote:bc756ddec1="RickyJo"]you can get milk without all that stuff done to it. organic no-hormone milk.[/quote:bc756ddec1] ah maybe but that milk is meant to be worse
