Hi Edwin, I would have to contact the web hosting people to know for sure, but I think it's UNIX. The only message I get is that they don't support executable files, and they give me a list of files that they DO support like JPEG, GIF etc. Earthlink won't let me upload these files either on their web hosting. Thanks! UCS
those files should work. they are Java files and should run on any server, for the most part. send a note off to the hosting people and find out what programming languages are supported. when they respond let us know and we will have some suggestion for you.
.class.java files are not really scripts, rather java source and applications, some servers can run these on the server and some cannot or will not They are also used with java applets that run inside a browser. Sometimes they can contain malicious code. We've run into this before with some clients, to avoid problems earthlink has simply opted to not support server side or client side java applets and executables. In addition this would include ActiveX controls. A rather harsh but effective security and stability measure. What type of scripts do you want to use? Most java applets have alternatives such as: .php, .perl... but then again like Edwin said the server must support it. My recommendation find a different hosting company if you truly want to run the java applets. Many low end (inexpensive) ISP's/Free hosts don't support much more then static HTML and images, due to overhead (processor power, bandwidth, security and tech support) If you can give an idea of what you want to do maybe we can make a recomendation on what direction to take.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D Wow! I'm thrilled at the responces. Looks like I've come to the right people! After talking to my hosting outfit, I've found that they choose not to support executables for the very reasons that you guys mentioned (security, malicious code, etc). I've started selling chess sets lately and I've decided to try my hand at building my own site. www.uniquechesssets.com The java applet that I'm most concerned with presently is a Chinese chess game that I would like to add. It can be found at http://www.nchess.com/download.html#b. It's the coffee chinese chess. Looking at my site, however, I feel like it could use a few more bells and whistles. Maybe a little motion. I've collected a folder full of applets but almost all of them have a .class file associated with them. I am under the impression that if my hosting outfit won't support .class files, I can still add the applets to my site, store the .class files on someone else's server, and call the .class files as the applets need them. Thanks again for everyone's support!
The site looks good, couple suggestions, You scroll to the right even on 1024x768 so I can only imagine what happens to 800x600.. and your pics are a tad pixelated.. I would suggest making sure that you don't have them "stretched".. The blurriness is disconcerting to the eye and will defeat the purpose of having them. About hosting the .class on one server and running it from another.. You can do that.. Altho I wouldn't recommend it. If you can host it on one server, why not just take the entire site to that host? You are going to need to pay for a host to hold the files anyways... Places like GEOCITIES, etc (if they even allow those files) will nail you for "hot linking". you could end getting banned from certain servers if your not careful. There are plenty of inexpensive hosts that can handle what you need.. And if you are going to grow and move up with Java, etc... you should seriously consider moving.. Glad we could help!
i agree that is pretty lame behavior from your host. their security rationale is a little overblown. if worse comes to worse, send me a pm and i'm sure i can beat their price on a hosting package with more features. have a good one.
