Discussion - demand for free hosting?

Nothing wrong with free hosting services Mike. They fill a need in the community for folks that want to get online, the hosts are creating technology platforms that are useful. I seen one network that the ASP supports by running ADSENSE along side of the free blogs he lets folks publish on his ASP. So it is good for everyone if you can make it work. I have seen some free hosts go broke leaving many blogs in the dust as they shut the servers down when the load got too big.

http://news.com.com/3%2C000+blogs+lose+their+voice/2100-1038_3-5236308.html MIKE THE ABOVE IS THE FREE BLOG SERVICE THAT WAS FORCED TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF TOO MUCH OF A LOAD.

thats the whole problem. the costs can get out of hand quick. and you have to watch out for fraudsters on free hosts too!

Not to mention the fact that someone has to pay for the bandwidth, tech support etc. If there is very little money in it, I don't see how it is economically feasable to "carry" free hosted accounts. But then again, I don't see how super cheap webhosts are making it either. If you are providing hosting accounts a 2.00/month per, it takes a lot of accounts to even make 100.00 (before paying out expenses) so I'm not sure volume is the answer either. How do you compete with Yahoo, which is relatively cheap and is an icon on the internet?

EZ, I need you to host about 500 sites for me, can you do this for free, I promise that the bandwidth will not be much for your servers. You do know how to set up a server right. If you do Edwin, will you start a thread on it, it would make a great subject for a thread, why don't you or BK or DZ start one? The ring goes to whoever gets there first. Someone remind me of where the thread is if anybody starts it.

Again I ask, what are you planning on doing with 500 websites/ domains?

Brigid, when you tell us what your website is I will tell you what I am going to do with my 500 domains and websites. Do you do any design work? Maybe you can build sites for me, what are your skills, we have been trying to get your bio for a long time Brigid, but what we get are more and more and more questions and no answers. Are you running a underground website or maybe something that is secret? 8O 8O 8O ITS ABOUT TIME WE HOLD YOUR FEET TO THE FIRE BRIGID 8O 8O 8O

I'm a knowledge worker that knows free webhosting is not a good business model :) I work on a couple of different websites on varying subjects.. I can't imagine working on 500 at once. Maybe you are hust savvier than the rest of us here :)

That is not enough information, work on a couple websites, are the websites yours? Or do you build them for your employer? :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Is the server running on windows or linux?

Brigid is not going to answer any more than she has already DZ, she has secrets to keep, I have been trying to break her down for the longest time. But she ain't giving an inch of ground 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O Vote against GWB, please, this country is sucking more and more everyday            I approve this message 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

Im sure if we put our minds together we can get rid of bush. and figure out what brigid is running. 8)

Brigid ain't giving an inch of ground, you can bet on that. 8O 8O 8O Even when we gave her a fan club she still would not give a bio, so even her fan club had to be put on hold, she has secrets you may or may not find out 8O 8O

..that is what keeps you guys interested :) I have a secret society that I run quietly behind the scenes. One day I will reveal details.. promise. and GWB is my hero!

[quote:e82587545d="Brigid"] and GWB is my hero![/quote:e82587545d] Please tell me your messing. He is the dumbest man ever to have his finger on a red button, Worldwide. If you support him I may have to destroy you. and Im trying to cut down and all. Is your secret society like mine, with your own satellites and private army? opps i have said 2 much its ok though, you will all probably think im joking 8)

We can skip the political talk. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You won't change my mind, and I won't change yours. So I'll agree to disagree and skip the whole part about "being destroyed" :) No satellites or soldiers involved. I guess my society isn't as powerful as yours, although if Anthony switched sides we could overthrow you! LOL..

[quote:5eccff8381="Brigid"]You won't change my mind, and I won't change yours. [/quote:5eccff8381] Of course I can change your mind. I still have those free labotomy vouchers from the freemasons. 8) [quote:5eccff8381="Brigid"] I guess my society isn't as powerful as yours, although if Anthony switched sides we could overthrow you! My answer: somebody HAS to try!   Seriously, it just has to be planned and managed as best as possible. It's a very difficult and challenging business model... it's unproven to a point, although Yahoo/Lycos seem to be still doing it and don't seem to plan to stop doing it - they wouldn't do it if they kept losing money on it.

Well then I will wish you the best of luck on your venture. I worked for a discount webhosting company, and I will tell you that just because something is discounted, it will not lower the expectations of your customers. If you are scaled right, maybe things will be different for you, but I suggest you outline in your "business plan" what exactly is provided in their webhosting package as far as support goes. Newbies that don't know what day it is and are trying to publish websites could tax your personnel on phones and in Email, and don't generate cash flow in your pocket. Not trying to harsh your gig, but just some things to take into account before you set up shop in a highly competitive/ not much reward hosting business.

Seriously speaking, I used to be the founder/divisional manager of HostAmerica (1995-1999) and it was a real logistical nightmare at times to deal with all the demands of running a technical support desk. Luckily I had a good team and folks willing to take heat and not dish it back. In retrospect, I think our advantage is that we supply a user-friendly site builder interface and specifically tout ourselves as a "free service", so the "hands-on support" expectation really shouldn't be there in the first place. Don't think we still don't get lots of e-mails from our users. We do our best to respond to them, but it's nowhere near the same level of support required to be provided for traditional hosting. BTW, in all fairness, I don't knock any paid-hosting companies... they have their work cut out for them (as do we). It's just a different business model. Thanks for the well wishes though. Same goes for you and your company! :D

Thanks much :) Good luck and keep us posted on how things go.
