I submitted mine when I launched my site a few weeks ago. It still hasn't appeared, but I'm not surprised, as its owner Netscape is in big financial difficulties, and the directory relies on volunteers. Give them a break, they're working as hard as they can/will.
I agree they do a pretty good job for volunteers. The people in DMOZ aren't complaining, only the ones who are waiting.
I submitted a new site of mine today. I figured I would post that information so that I can come back and look up the date later LOL!
Today I found that my website has a DMOZ listing!! Hurray! However it doesn't show on any of the major Search engines as of yet. How long does it normally take DMOZ listings take to get indexed? Thanks in advance for your input!
I'm guessing it takes just as long as it takes to index every other site linking to you... around 1 month. I want to be listed I signed up for the 3rd time a few weeks ago, pretty sure I will get in this time. My site is beautiful now. :D
all the sites get in...eventually
I'm still waiting on Dmoz. It's been so long, I really do feel for the editors and the hazing they put up with. The resource-zone is ok, but save yourself some time of posting there. Most likely your answer will be "yes they have your submission and yes you are on the waiting list." I received a responce from one of the editiors saying "good news, you're on the list and everything looks good, and bad news, the list is very very long." So in a nutshell DMOZ=Time.... 9 months so far. Gonna buy a cake and blow out some candles when we finally get in. But, I'm babbling now.... :?
i'm at 70 days. pretty reasonable considering some other these other posts. if your category doesn't have an editor, you will be waitiing a long time.
I don't recall getting an email from them letting me know that it was listed. Do they even notify you?
No, unfortunately they will not notify you. They also will not notify you if your sight is rejected either. You just have to check on a monthly basis and ask at the resource-zone.
Ive tried to submit my site for the past 3 days...i hit the submit and it doesnt do anything...almost like its getting no response or something? Anyone else havin this problem?
they appear to be in some sort of half-crashed state. i haven't even been able to pull their website consistently for several days.
they have been on crash mode for a few days as far as i can tell.. couldn't get in without a crash..
your page in DMOZ is a PageRank 6 feathers! that should give you a big boost in PR on the next update.
check it! now just the waiting for the update.. I've saw a few referral codes in my log files, so we shall see! :D I'll keep ya'll posted
the pagerank fairie is coming with a sack full of PR :)
Is the PR Fairy like the Tooth Fairy ?? If I print out my pages of "fallen out PR" and put them under my pillow the PR Fairy will come visit me?? Hey! I am willing to do anything at this point! BTW My Robots.txt file was bombarded with hits yesterday.. including from Google.... *do a little dance*
the robots.txt will make the pagerank fairie very happy :)
I have my fingers crossed for ya on the pr. I'm still anxiously waiting for dmoz to pick up my site, to hopefully increase my pr.
i am waiting too. i guess you can inquire at the editors forum, but i doubt it will help much of anything.
Yeah I just experienced that problem 30 seconds b4 i loaded this thread. wanted to see if my site was in or not and my browser didn't even pull the page, had to hit refresh twice before it finally loaded.
that site is up and down more than a six year old on a pogo stick.
You mean Dmoz was actually up ? Dang....I missed it :?
Today their main page is up. Click on any of the links though and you get a "PAGE NOT FOUND". What an impressive technical marvel they are. Think it has anything to do with AOL owning them?
it was semi crashed today. main pages pull up but sub directories don't :)
The submit button doesn't work.
[quote:f89fa87647="BigRob"]The submit button doesn't work.[/quote:f89fa87647] I haven't been able to submit a new site for weeks now. So now it takes a month or two to submit and then 6 months to a year to get in. Quite efficient!
LOL, today I can't get past the first page! I always get a permission denied for my sub directory! 8O
realistically, the DMOZ site hasn't worked for a long time! i am about ready to give up on them.
Today, for me, I get a Page Not Found for the whole domain.
lol! this is the most prestigious directory on the internet!

Weird how its' set to editors.dmoz.org
the permission denied message continues. its starting to seem like DMOZ is not coming back up.
We could be only so lucky...maybe google will take away the influence they use from dmoz for their directory as well. This is ridiculus that google's directory is the same as Dmoz but you can't get into dmoz. Maybe it's a conspiracy
it probably helps to explain why the google directory never updates too. they can't get the data from dmoz!
I really do have to submit my site someday. Or is even important anymore?
its not incredibly important, frederico. but it still is free pagerank. i get a site not found yet again today.
Today was a bit different. The site came up, everything was popping along fine. However, the submit button doesn't work. I hit it an hour ago and it is still hanging. Apparently they never set a timeout value.
I guess it should come as no surprise that DMOZ is down again today.
nope. the surprise would be if it was up. i think its time for people to forget about DMOZ.
Forget about Who ? :?
My submitter spent forever getting us in DMOZ... this sucks!!! Is it ever going to be worth it??
lo and behold! a miracle. the submit button works like a champ today! and the whole dmoz site is running fast. maybe the technical woes are over.
its a miracle! we are saved!
It appears to be working very well today! Maybe the technical woes are over!
hats off to DMOZ.. it's good to see that they are functioning as of this moment.. :D
Shhhh.. if we cheer to much it might Jinx it!!!! I hope they are going to stay up this time..
I turned my site in on 9/30/2003 after finally getting the submission form to work. I saw an editors.dmoz.org referral in my log files on 10/4/2003 so they already visited the site. I'm not sure if/when I will show up but that was a mighty fast review!
that's probably a good sign, lp. should be in any day now.
I hope someone can post good news about dmoz..... I'm still waiting since the beginning of the year. They tell me I'm in a que of 200+.
i agree with chance. just because they editor "reviewed" the site so quick isn't a guarantee of inclusion.
Yepper. My site was reviewed like a week after submitted. Or at least it appeared to be. It has been months and it still hasn't show up.
are you even sure the referrer log means they reviewed the site? might just be some sort of link checker bot running to make sure the site is active.
I saw a referral from editors.dmoz.org and something about submission so it appeared some clicked on the link in the review queue. "He" didn't appear to click on many pages so I really don't know.
bigrob, i think that is a bot. nothing to get excited about. here's something to get excited about: http://www.deemozwatch.org/
I guess that guy doesn't plan on being in DMOZ ;)
Edwin, I love the site you refered...it's scary how true it is... Should be interested to see if it takes off.
any word on your DMOZ listing Link-pimp? I hate it it when things take forever. I know that patience is a virtue and all, but it is aggravating!!
Nah, Brigid, I'm not in. I don't even think that referrer code meant anything. More like a bot checking that the site exists. I am however, in Yahoo! All that took was money :) If you haven't already done so, make sure to toss your listing in Link-pimp.com. I actually am getting some decent traffic there now!
[quote:8186d79273="Chance"]Edwin, I love the site you refered...it's scary how true it is... Should be interested to see if it takes off.[/quote:8186d79273] probably too much fear of retribution. here's another one: http://www.dmozisdead.com/ nothing really there, just a statement. i guess the frustration is getting to people.
You know you have a frustrated individual on your hands when they go as far as purchasing a url and taking even a moment to set up a basic hate site. Owch !
i took a look at the resource-zone today. one guy started his thread on 11/2/2002! he was still politely asking about his submission, and now 11 months later they told him it was still in a queue with 100 other sites, same as it was in 11/2002! man that is some sloooooooooow service.
A little part of me just wishes that Dmoz would accept bribes or a payoff. I'd gladly dish out the $$. It would sure beat waiting a year or more. On the other hand....if google would drop them on their influence for their directory and not give any PR for it ......that would be even better..... Or even my biggest wish...Google would deem Dmoz to be a link farm and give negative ranking for it.....he he he
the level of unhappiness with DMOZ is very high these days. but then again, they don't owe webmasters anything. its a free site run by volunteers and most webmasters are trying to make money off their websites. definitely a natural sort of cross roads between interests.
[quote:bbf9b1e51b]I guess that guy doesn't plan on being in DMOZ[/quote:bbf9b1e51b] Hello, I don't know why not. While much of the content is gleaned from other spots on the web, much is original. Additionally, from the DMOZ Guidelines on what sites can be included. "Contrasting points of view on major issues. The ODP attempts to cover the full breadth and depth of human knowledge, representing all topics and points of view on those topics. " Trust me when I say there have been a disproportionate amount of referrals from the private editors forums. Surely one of them would think to include the site. I guess when it comes to objectivity, humans don't do it better. By the way, I like what you have going on here too. :D
hello deemoz :welcome that would definitely be wrong if DMOZ wouldn't include a site just because the site was critical of DMOZ or its editors. after all, its a "republic" of the web :)
hiya deemoz :welcome
I disagree with you Edwin. As the "de facto" directory on the Internet, DMOZ does owe something to webmasters. They at least owe the overall Internet community stability of operation and somewhat speedy reviews. Waiting a year or more for a listing is ridiculous.
