[quote:d04d5b9d8a="edwin"]whats so great about that feature?[/quote:d04d5b9d8a] Some people just don't get it
Google is simply doing what they have to do, use the high value of their stock to acquire new businesses to diversify away from the majority of their cash flow derived from advertising. This is just one of the many acquisitions you will see, many more are coming. Mapping is the number one internet application believe it or not and Google is aware of this great business.
Personally, I think it's a mistake for them to get into content providing. Being a wannabe portal will not help them much in the long run.
What practical application does this have for everyday life? I could see where this would something of interest to governments, but why would an average person want or need this?
The average person wouldnt but a lot of big companies would, and they would pay as well.
at some point google has to sell more b2b apps so this may be a good move.
Google will acquire many database related companies with the stock as currency. They must diversify away from 95% of cash flow from the fickle advertising market while they still have a chance. Stocks do not stay up on fluff forever and Wall Street will soon short the stock just as they pushed it up of late. Remember the first Dot Com Bubble :?:
They do have a business version. It is available for 599.00 (if I remember correctly) I guess it could give companies a chance to see what the demographics (visually) of a target market. If the houses or neighborhoods are crappy they can just move on to a better markets.
They'll probably make big money off this deal like everything else they've done lately.
The question is are they aiming long term or short term.
