Site maps - how to?

hello krifos :welcome a sitemap is as you thought, an .html page which is a list of the other pages on your website. you can call it "SiteMap" simply enough and name it map.html or something similar. then make sure you have a link to the sitemap from every page you have. i recommend a free sitemap make called Xenu to help you make the page if your site is very big.

Welcome! :) Google Search for: Sid Meier's Pirates discussion forum which are a couple of your keywords.... Congrats.. you are on Pg. 2 - # 17 You're in there... its just going to take a while for google to catch up... They can spider your site 500 times and only update THEIR information 1nce.... believe me its a pain in the a** however... its what we all go thru and deal with.. If google does nothing else for us..it definantly teaches us the fine art of Patience

Welcome aboard :welcome

Google makes me want to scream. One day all my sites will be in top 10 the next day they wont :( i do have the meta tag index all 1 day ?? Does this have any effect on my problem ? I am a newbie too so welcome me with LOVEEEEEE

Welcome Ashly :welcome Unfortunantly that is just Google at its best... Their results are ever changing and never stable... The slightest thing can make you drop... I was shooting up and down from wayyyyyyyy down on the list to non existent... Now I'm 15...

Higher PageRank is the cure for most of the woes. Higher PR = more frequent crawls and more stability in the index. Get more links. That is the main thing to do to increase you rankings with Google.

Google has gone through more of my pages now it seems! Anyways, here is my sitemap (made by hand manually;p): http://www.addictedtopirates.com/sitemap.html Also, if you search for "sid meier's pirates fansite" I am number 2 (and 3) A search for "sid meier's pirates fanpage" i am number 1 (well only one at all) Search for "sid meier's pirates 2 fansite" makes me number 4, "Pirates 2 fansite" number 7, "pirates fansite" page 5, number 5. I did (on the very top of the page, where the title image is) include a "hidden text" (same color as background image) - and it seems google spidered that well... (> Site Map - Home "A Sid Meier's Pirates! 2 fanpage, news, forum, faq, interviews, stories, polls") that in quotes is hidden text. Edit: if you search for "sid pirates forum" you will find my page first, and it uses the "hidden text" as keywords.

good job with the site map... One suggestion.. You have black text on an almost black background...big booboo with SE... they'll nail you for Spam if the text color is not greater then 20% from the background..and could severely injure your ranking Not to mention none of your customers can read it either...

Changed the black text to almost white (CCCCCC) - white looked too sharp, was annoying for the eye imo. SE = Search Engines? How do they differ the colors?

the search engines, google in particular, have a tough time deciphering hidden text. that is why you will see many top sites employing this technique. it becomes a problem when your competitor gets jealous of your position and turns in a spam report. mostly these are ignored also but there is some risk cheating, although not very great.

How can it be cheating? It's just having some keywords at the page - without making visitors annoyed by it (Kinda like the meta tag). If I spammed keywords a thousand times, THEN it would be cheating I agree, but I just have relevant keywords though.

It may not be fair.. but they hold all the cards.. noone said they had to play fair
