Backlinks should have text related to search terms you are targeting, from high PR related sites, The title tag is the most important element after backlinks, each page should have unique title and meta tags related to the page content,on page content, link popularity and anchor text alone should work with yahoo, google is a bit trickier, focus on on page 1st off, dont overload the body text with keywords, keep it natural and readable. eg, company formations link in my sig is a backlink for company formation. works for yahoo, msn, etc google requires high PR links though.
you bring up some good issues. don't try to optimize too many words for one page. its much too tough. the best thing to do is to optimize individual pages for individual keywords. go for 3 or 4 keyword phrases at first. there's less competition than with 2 word ones. try to be as descriptive as possible in your title tags. make sure to submit to at least 3 or 4 directories in the proper categories. this will help your rankings immensely.

i'm a believer in naming your pages after the term too. so you're selling barbeque tools you have the page named barbeque-tools.html the anchor text should also be "barbeque tools". that way google has a very clear idea of what your page is about.
still learing the terminology..........anchor text is the text that they click on ie they might click on 'help' and be sent to faq.html obviously I unerstand the term 'link', but 'back link', I'm not clear on.............sorry an internat link? - a link that points to another site? - or link that points to the same loction as other links in your site :? ta - Paul
backlink is just a way of saying a link back to your site or a link to your site. otherwise you sem to understand fairly well.
