looks good! thanks for the heads up!
Here is an other one that allows you to track many more keywords and (competitor?) web sites: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/ This one is also completely free,.. just need to get the Google API key which you can request for free. Regards, Peter
see i don't think i would ever use such a tool. makes it too easy for google to figure out what i'm doing!
Does that mean you are doing things that go against their terms of service? :D Peter
not right now but you never know when i might want to :) no i'm just kidding but i do think google is getting too much power. they know an awful lot from their toolbar but with a google API they would no exactly what sites are optimizing for what words. with a bunch of people using one tool i wonder if it would make them sitting ducks.
Why would you think that it is bad when a search engine knows that a site is optimized or not? Google won't punish you for optimizing a web site. But they will punish you if you try to trick them.... But SEO really doesn't need any tricks. Anyone who tries to use tricks is just not good at real SEO. In any way,... don't worry about them knowing that you optimized a site or not. They won't hold you personally responsible for optimization... :) Peter
You make a valid point. Optimization is not the same as manipulation. Or at least it doesn't have to be.
Just a message against this thread - you don't need to enter the Google API when you sign up for www.googlealert.com  , that way, Google doesn't know for what keyword your optimizing etc. So its a pretty safe thing really, and useful, nothing bad happen if you ask me, and say if Google see's you optimizing for keywords - will they care??? they have about 4 billion web pages to manage, they won't care, As long as your site provides good information and is well Search engine optimized - they don't care. Sid
Webmasters are always afraid that Google is watching them or has it out for them. But as Sootle said there are over 4 BILLION pages in the index. They really don't have the time to pick on anyone.
[quote:7af692a29b]there are over 4 BILLION pages in the index. They really don't have the time to pick on anyone.[/quote:7af692a29b] hmm,.. That isn't entirely true. Their algorithms do try to detect web sites that try to fool the search engines. Below is quote from http://www.google.com/webmasters/2.html [quote:7af692a29b]Your page was manually removed from our index, because it did not conform with the quality standards necessary to assign accurate PageRank. We will not comment on the individual reasons a page was removed and we do not offer an exhaustive list of practices that can cause removal. However, certain actions such as cloaking, writing text that can be seen by search engines but not by users, or setting up pages/links with the sole purpose of fooling search engines may result in permanent removal from our index. If you think your site may fall into this category, you might try 'cleaning up' the page and sending a re-inclusion request to help@google.com. We do not make any guarantees about if or when we will re-include your site.[/quote:7af692a29b] As you see,.. you can try to trick them, but don't be upset if you get penalized or in the worsed case, banned... :) Peter
At least they tell you how you can get back in if you "clean up". At least you get a second chance. I agree you should not attempt to fool the engines. And you don't even have to if you work very hard at making your website on topic. If you add links and are patient you can probably get to the top in a year.
Depending on how competitive a keyword phrase is it can take anywhere between a month and a year.
What can you do in a month? I would have guessed more than 5 months or so. How do you define a competitive keyword?
I would like to tell you something: When I opened my search engine, I did a little bit of SEO, and just wrote "A half human, half spider based search engine" in the title. That time , I wasn't spidered by Google yet. So after some days, I saw that I had been spidered in my logs, I checked, and yes, it was spidered! At that time, I searched for "half spider" as this keyword was in my title, and guess what? I was no.1 and that time I had a PR of 0  I guess a little keyword on the title can do great optimizing.
Searchey, Sootle gives an excelent example. The competition of a keyword is determined by the number of results that a search engine gives. Google shows this in the top right of the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). Do a search for the word "the". You will find that it finds about 1.300.000.000 pages. The competition for the word "the" is huge. Do a search for the phrase: half spider half human, and it finds about 165.000 pages. The competition for this phrase is not soo big. So low competition words are easier and faster optimized for than high competition words. Regards, Peter
There are probably a great number of phrases that remain un-optimized. Depending on the niche you find yourself in, you may be the only one optimizing the pages. If that's the case, expect a lot of easy number ones!
Yep,.. that is correct,.. but there are reasons for many phrases not being optimized for. The most probable reason is that nobody uses them to search with in the search engine. You can have number 1 positions on many phrases, but if nobody uses those phrases than it is a lot of work for nothing. There are some resources available for finding out the Popularity of a phrase: Keyword Suggestion Tools Peter
Yet another valid point and a point for discussion: competition. If no competition exists, you have found an unprofitable niche. If too much competition exists, you have found a profitable niche with too may competitors eating the pie. If you can find one somewhere in the middle, you will be doing great.
What happens if there is a huge competition on a keyword and you're first on it? That'll be good.
well yeah, that is best of all. if you can get number one for the word "the" you will get a ton of traffic. i'm working on "click here" right now. :P
With words like "the" it is a mere coincidence if one of your pages ranks number 1 on it. You won't get a ton of traffic for this word simply because nobody will be searching for "the",... :D Peter
So, after reading this thread, how many of you guys are still using Google-Alert 8O :?:
Not me,.. I use the link that I provided in a previous post... :) Google-Alert is just too limited. I do use Google though,.. As it still is the best search engine that exists... Peter
