I will be the third to agree. The Anchor text is the apparent king of search engines these days. You can't always control your link partner's anchor text but you should make a good effort of it. And always use perfect anchor text (keyword proximity of 100%) for any anchor text used in links on your own site. It seems like a lot of people neglect these simple things.
A couple on page factor worth noting: Use your keyphrase in the H1 and H2 tags if you have them. Some people are big believers in starting your main text with the keyphrase. Also, bold and italicize the words at least once in the text. The greater emphasis you place is helpful.
You always hear people talk about "keyword density", although they never say what the perfect density is. In any case, you need to make sure your keyword phrase is mentioned liberally throughout your document.
What if your website is not a community site and doesn't have 15 paragraphs of text on the first page? I understand that keyword density is a ratio between the number of words and the number of keywords mentioned but it is so much more difficult to get the good amount of keywords in a small paragraph then in the ten pages long one. What are your thoughts on that?
The main thing to do then, is to get proper anchor text in your back links. The truth is this: never before has Google cared more about off-page factors then it does now. The on-page factors (like density) are not as important as they used to be. Make sure to make these things consistent: Title Text Meta Description Text Anchor text to the page.
Links, links, and more links. And don't be stupid like some people, get links with as many sites as you can. Today's PR 0 sites are tomorrow's PR 5 or 6. Just make the link text consistent and always target your main keywords.

"Link Building" is the absolute, most mind numbingly boring work one can ever set out to do. Trading links with recalcitrant webmasters is pretty bad. But I can't say that I truly believe "Content is King" and people are going to naturally link to your site because they find it so invaluable. There aren't that many truly great sites on the Internet.
Link building for one site is not easy,.. but when you deliver it as a service you get better at it,.. :) If you like, I can do some link building for you at reasonable prices. (Is it allowed to say this in this forum?) Regards, Peter
If there were more at stake I would outsource it. However, there isn't a whole lot of money involved right now so I can do it myself. And yes, you can feel free to pitch your services here. Everyone here is pretty much a webmaster looking to make money, so it's understandable :)
once your pagerank gets past a certain point people will start looking for you to trade. you won't have to work hard on links for ever.

First you have to write dozens of emails to request link exchanges,.. then you have a high PR and you have to read hundreds of emails that request link exchanges from you... :D Peter
true enough. i guess link building never really gets and easier.
It is sort of boring but that's why you don't do it all day. Do it for a few minutes here and there and think of the long term. If you could add 10 links a month it will start to add up after awhile.
Guys You are sitting here and complaining about how boring and stupid the whole backlinking is. At the same time you know better then I do that it is important and should be done if you care about your se position. So :welcome to the real world where everything is not always pleasant but still has to be done
For sure. It is a job, like anything else. It requires effort but it pays off in the long run. Getting good placement for your website is definitely one of the jobs of being a webmaster.
And if you really don't like to work on link popularity,... send me an email,. :D
