I had figured that it would be links on other sites that pointed to yours would be the ones that would make the difference, but surely no-one would let you have a link from their site without you having a link to theirs in return ?
Oh yes they will. There are lots of important directories that will let you submit your site either for free or for a small fee. Others do require a reciprocal link. Try this site for a great list that can be sorted by name, PR (page rank), free/paid, etc. (just click on the top header to sort). http://www.strongestlinks.com/directories.php
forgive my ignorance.......when we talk links , we are talking more of getting your name known by the directories than by the webmasters of other normal sites ? P.S- just tried Zeal and they wanted my to do a quiz before I could coninue to list my site, unfortuanatly I did not score enough to pass, so I gave up ! Paul

The search engines seem to spider some sites more often than others. If you have a link on a site that is spidered by the search engines (like google), it has a good chance of being picked up. Just for example, Google spiders Gimpsy every day, the little google spider runs around inside Gimpsy looking for new things we have added to the directory. Then these links google's spider found will then be shown in the google search engine. This works for almost all the major directories, not just Gimpsy. Lots of people give up. I've never tried it myself (have no need to) but I heard it is kinda tough.
