the expert system - already in play?

Sort of a boring read but worth it. Of course they deem certain sites "Expert" sites and the group sites based on links. I'm sure this technology is already going on.

"Ranking Based on Connectivity: This approach involves analyzing the hyperlinks between pages on the web on the assumption that: (a) pages on the topic link to each other, and (b) authoritative pages tend to point to other authoritative pages" that's why it is usually a good idea to have "outbound authority links" on every page you optimize for. it helps tell google what you are all about.

I was wondering ... Is it possible the reason we were considered "SPAM" and wiped out completely because I have almost no outbound links to "authoritive sites"? and/or the fact that a lot of my links go back and forth between FPWORLD and Webinaminute?

I think the outbound authority links can't hurt. Put one link on the page to the DMOZ Category of your page and it helps Google match the results. No one so far has been able to pinpoint why sites got wiped out for certain phrases. The linking you did must have been okay because it had you ranked Top 10. Something else caused the wipe out.

Ok... So I will go .. leave the Webinaminute links alone.. and add more outbound targetted links... directed towards DMOZ category (i think I'll hide that on a deep interior page.. no sense in giving people easy access to competitors) ... and I take it the other ones should have something to do with my keywords? Plus I need to add a few "broader" pages.... Now.. I don't want to screw with the pages I have because if this filter goes away I'm in the top 5/10 ... but if it stays I'm screwed without doing something... Should I lower my FrontPage Templates keyword density? I think we are at 4 or 5% could that possibly help put us under their spam filter radar without harming us in general?

From what I've seen, lowering the keyword density can't hurt at all. As a matter of fact, it may help. Perhaps change a couple occurences of Templates to Template, that way you might be able to score on both phrases. Also, don't be afraid to change it at this point. So far no one has come back from the "Florida Update" for the phrases they lose. You are still ranked high in Allinanchor because of the links, so if they remove their "filter" you will go back up anyway.

And, of course, one of the big points about an expert system such as Hilltop (and even TopicSensitive PageRank) is that Directories now really come into their own. I am a firm believer that Google has implemented an expert system akin to Hilltop, and have marked out today as one where I submit all of my sites to every free directory I can trace. I actually found this forum through a post on Phil Craven's WebWorkshop. And I'm not one to pass up a forum. :)

Welcome britecorp! :welcome Yeah, I've been posting at Phil's for a long time. He is top notch. There's no doubt that directory listings are HUGE. However, the expert system doesn't competely explain everything.

Certainly right it doesn't - though I personally believe that Hilltop [i:fe0a3d097f]and[/i:fe0a3d097f] Applied Semantics technology together could account for the vast majority of the changes in the SERPs since November 13th. Certainly GoogleGuy mentioned in WebMasterWorld that there were two parts. Of course, there could be another form of expert system in place - Dan Thies had made the point of raising TopicSenstitive PageRank to the fore with this. However, when you look at the initial observations of the SERPs immediately post-florida, I personally feel there is a lot to recommend the expert plus semantics system. The Florida effect seems to have become somewhat diluted since then, though. Of course, I could be quite wrong about it all - but I don't mind admitting when I am. :) Btw - I normally go under the name of "I, Brian", but for some reason this forum wouldn't allow either spaces or punctuation marks in user names. Hence the use of the company name for the alias.

Hi, "I, Brian", good to see you again. I can check the forum software settings and see what the reason for that issue would be. I post as webmastery on the other forums and I'm about to change my username to that today, as a matter of fact. But back to the point at hand, why would their be two stages to the Florida Update?

looks like there's a 3rd or 4th stage now! i see florida sites returning in the last 24 hours!
