Today they say he is a broken man, begging to be protected from his people. So he must know he wasn't very good to them.
You would have to imagine that a "part" of him was still human, and knew that what he was doing was cruel and wrong. Let the chips fall where they may for him. He did some horrible things to his fellow man, and he shouldn't be surprised that others want him to see an end that befits him, too.
