It really depends on how big the image is, and how many you have on your page. If you have one image, 150-250 kb if it's just an image, 150 and under if you have other stuff aswell. Banners should be well under 100, maybe around 50 or so. Smaller images in the teens. Of course file size is proportional to image size, so it all depends. But I'd say keep total image size for all images around 250 (50kbs = 5 seconds to load or so).
Your best bet is to have the whole page be under 100k. Most image files should be 7-15K max for fast loading.
Heyer I would have to strongly disagree. 50-100k is way too big for an image. Like Tom said, most images should be under 20k. Most banners should be no more then 15k. One exception here is the header image which is usually high quality and can be relatively large 30-50k. You best choice for the format is .gif, they are small and can have pretty good quality. I usually make my headers in .jpg because you can regulate its size very easily in the Photoshop and you can get a very high quality for a relatively small size. Hope it helps. Andrey
I have to agree with both the above.. any picture over 20-25k unless its a "large view" is a bad idea... no web page should be larger then 75-100k total like Tom said... Tho now and then we all break those rules you should try and come as close to that as possible if you want to keep customers coming back, or for that matter to keep them there period... They may eventually up that slightly when it gets to be more people on DSL and Cable.. but by then it will be a different standard all together...
I do check responses to my answers. All that was there was comercial stuff. I am 15 i have no money. Notice when I said: "online image compressor" the idea was I wanted something free. ie, does not cost 500 dollars like photoshop. I am well aware the multiple ppl mentioned photoshop, that just doesn't help me. *pout*
Sorry, RickyJo. We didn't know how old you were. This one is online based - http://www.spinwave.com/crunchers.html --removed-- Also you might look into this http://download.com.com/3000-2192-10223761.html?tag=list. It is free and has format conversion. I think you can change the quality there. Hope it helps.
Thank you! :D yes! That's what I was looking for! This is the one I used a couple years ago! That's EXACTLY what i was looking for! I try not to pirate software, I'm guilty of a few little things (old NES games on emulators etc) but free photoshop is a differant thing entirely (in my opinion). You know a good cartoon about pirating though? http://www.reallifecomics.com/daily.php?strip_id=1110 :-D
Don't mention it. Pretty funny cartoon...product activation...sad but true :x Good old time of activationless software...
Do not despair...there is still good activiationless software out there.
