For something fairly simple I would go with PictureIt! because it gives you a lot of choices for 3D effects and such. But when you go more advanced and need to make it darker here, lighter there and transparent on one side plus you have 3 layers of overlapping images then PhotoShop is the solution for you. I use PS in both cases because I am used to it. As for ACDSee, its a good program but it is great for viewing images and not too great for editing.

There are only 3 graphics programs I've ever used... I've tried others but none work as well: LogoCreater (an awesome program for simple but professional looking logo's...) PaintShop Pro and Polyview to me none others are needed

isn't photoshop the best?

My dad says it (photoshop) has never been rivaled. He says in the profesional stuff, it's pretty much the all purpose, everybody uses, program. It's just a load of money...

Went to the LogoCreator site, their [u:ebebe8f1e3]sample logo's[/u:ebebe8f1e3] seem to look very professional, may have a try..

I agree. Wish I had money for that type of stuff. They look extremely nice! 8O

check out my avatar: http://web-mastery.net/modules/Forums/images/avatars/db5802e5401478a384108.gif made it using Jasc soft's Paint/Animation Shop Pro :) (those are the soft's I recently bought) Its a south park character saying "I didn't kill kimi"

Avatar went BOOM! I have no idea where it is :)

ok fixed now. Is there anyway to fix that bug in PHPnuke??

Phptoshop is the best for me. I use it.

:welcome Andrews_John :)

I hate to go back on-topic, but... I use Macromedia Fireworks- easy to use, cheaper than Photoshop and more internet-specialised. But it's by Macromedia, so very expensive.

I use TheLogoCreator myself.....pretty good lil program...simple to use...creates decnt stuff for about 70 bucks. Best money ive spent on graphics stuff although you are a lil limited on things you can do.....I use it in partner with microsoft image composer and i can useually get things atleast where they dont make me puke. hawg

fireworks. worth every penny :)

:welcome Welcome Dave! Fireworks is one I haven't heard too much about. You have any info on that one?

there's a product tour and a 30 day fully functional trial available from macromedia http://www.macromedia.com/software/fireworks/ for web graphics it's a better all-round package than photoshop, IMO

Cool. That one definitely looks like one to check out. Thanks for the tip.

I tryed the trial of that one, and it seemed like it didn't have as many filters and effects as PhotoShop. Is that true? I didn't use it for very long just half hour or so. Freddy

you can use most (if not all) of your PS filters in fireworks if you point it to the PS plugins directory. I'm not so certain about the CS version of PS but i wouln't see why not. a lot of effects can also be built up as live effects applied to vector elements, so they remain fully editable, as well as the effects available for bitmaps. possibly PS is more powerful when it comes to all its filters/effects but fireworks can pretty much do everything PS can do and a lot more as far as vector work goes. there are also a lot of extensions written for fireworks that are (mostly) free, that make it even more powerful. for pretty much photograph based work or extensive use of bitmaps then PS may be a better choice (i still use ps for most of my photo work) but for everything else FW rocks. Of course FW is still pretty good at bitmap work as well, and i find masking easier to do in it. you'd probably find that the brushes as well are possibly better in ps, but i think a good fireworks artist could emulate whatever a good PS artist did at least for the web! there are a lot of fans of both (and a lot of people that use both) best thing is try the trial and then try and find the cash for it!! otherwise paintshoppro seems like a good buy, especially for the money

i tried the paint shop pro recently and i didnt like it too much. its not intuitive.

I tried FireWorks (well have been since ages), its pretty hard to learn, just like PhotoShop (with online tutorials etc), But ones you get used to it, you get used to it.

I still use Photoshop. I'm on the CS version now. I think you always get stuck using the first program you learn.

true but i started using photoshop 4 - 6 but i now use fireworks as my web tool of choice ;)

Definitely. You CAN adapt. I just rarely do :) I'm expanding my horizons a bit with other programs so I will probably give them all a shot. It takes me a long time to learn a new rprogram so I tend to limit my use to just a few.
