No need to be mean, but I know what you mean. If these folks are running their "businesses" online, they should have at least one more means of traffic than just free traffic from Google. Every time Google shuffles, they are out G.O.B.
I couldn't stand working a feild of work where the rules changed every two weeks.
most people can't stand it. but they get greedy and do it anyway. but ultimately google owes no one anything and there's no way to rely solely on them. ultimately you have to get at least some people to come back to your website. if you always have to get one time visitors from search engines, then something is wrong with the site or the marketing.
i'm still gona work in something more stable.
stick with the bricks and mortar :)
It's life: one minute you are on top...the next...you are on the 56th page in google  Deal with it!
I can't understand why the so-called "seo experts", blame Google for putting [b:f3503d17df]their[/b:f3503d17df] results from #5 to #20. I mean, they REALLY cry about it!! and some also start to "hate" Google, because it put their results down. I think Google is really doing their job trying to improve their results, its the SEOs who are spamming the index! If you have a good site, that would really look good on #1, go for it! But if you have a crappy site, and want to go on #1, why spam the Google index?
Oh, oh, can I answer that. I'll give you one good reason: to get traffic to your site that makes you money! Good enough?
*trumpets sound* Andrey has officially had a look into the deepest darkest part of human nature, the fundemental economic problem, and the driving force of society. In like...what? One sentance.
But isn't there any other way to drive traffic except for fooling search engines? PPC engines Banner Adverts ...and a thousand other ways I could think of! I don't say SEO is bad, but isn't it kind of stupid if you start crying because you went from #1 to #10?
However, I do understand that people to it as an occupation and make thousands a year as far as I've heard, so it wouldn't be very unusual for them to them to start moaning about every Google update, if their ranking decreases.
i understand the motivation of greed. indeed i understand it all too well! plus every webmaster thinks his/her website is the best no matter how bad it may be. but what i don't understand is the child-like reliance on google. how can you rely on a third party who has different goals than you do? not just different, but indeed diametrically opposed to yours! of course google would cut the throat of all seos and toss their lifeless bodies into a red toyota pickup truck like the taliban on a holy day. why would they want to see seo succeed?
They are greedy. And you know what happens to greedy pigs? They get slaughtered and turned into bacon. Sorry, but I was trying to compete with Edwin's imagery :)
You two are absolutely right. Its nice to have websites and to test your skills on SEO. But why'd you go crying if your result drops in a 3rd party search engine? Will Google cry if you close your site? or even when you close a product? Nope. They wouldn't even know about it.
First of all, Sid, what does Google have to do with out services or products. Google is the search engine and has nothing to do with the sites. As for dropping from 1st place to 3rd thats just plain bull. i don't think that many people were crying when they dropped to the 3rd. We are talking about sites that dropped from page 1 to page 21. I feel sorry for those seos that serviced the sites that dropped  . But then again, they'll figure out new ways to spam the index
i have no mercy for them. you live by the search engine manipulation, you die by the search engine manipulation. if you have no defined relationship with the third party you rely on then you have chosen to live on the edge.
[quote:63e1a0934a]what does Google have to do with out services or products. Google is the search engine and has nothing to do with the sites. [/quote:63e1a0934a] I totally dis-agree - if you think logically, without our websites, would there be any Google? so in other words, Google is powered by us, our sites. You also gotta realize that Google is also just a "yet another website". Only, its with a different service which leads the world in searching the web, and its meant to be for searching the web, but if people start to SPAM it, how will you ever get to search the web accurately? There are other search engines, but are they as good as the current Google? [quote:63e1a0934a]I feel sorry for those seos that serviced the sites that dropped .[/quote:63e1a0934a] I'm actually quite happy that their results did drop, they just got the right punishment for spamming the index! What bad SEO's do is only keep track of their results, if they drop, they start to cry. But you gotta think whats best for the users, and, it maybe that the first result that was replaced with yours is a better site than yours :?: :!:
that's very true! google needs websites to spider! without them it would be one boring search engine.
Guys that a weird way of looking at it. It's the same way as saying that there would be no government without people because people are the government? Maybe so but why do I feel like those guys up there in Washington, D.C. are from another planet and are still living there?! Google was relying on website when they started. Now websites rely on Google. That is the bottom line.
Google's dominance is absurd and temporary. There are many forces aligning to defeat them. At some point, they will need to become a regulated business because of the impact they have on other businesses. Right now they are GodLike and answer no questions. When they become a public company, everything has to change. But in reality, yes, Google does need to have websites to send surfers too. And let's face it, many people don't rely on free search engine traffic to succeed.
I agree with Andrey .. whether or not its fair or otherwise.. Google needed us to move up... now many of us need them to survive... Its the food chain... I hope that their "Godlike" status doesn't last... and yes.. they are going to have to face the wrath of places such as Yahoo, etc.. who are fighting to move up.. but the fact is whether or not we like it.. as long as Google is the first place most searchers go to... some will stay under googles foodchain because we have no choice..... My company has excellent repeat business and word of mouth business... but unfortunantely I NEED the ones who click on google to survive...Florida proved that.. I didn't starve, nor did our staff.. but we did get hurt... until yahoo or otherwise takes over as #1 thats the way it will be... as it will be for a number of others in my position...
it will be interesting to see google have to fight for their life. they have not done much of a job of branding. thats gonna hurt.
Thats very true... Places like Yahoo have the "Y" and the "Yahoooooooooooooooooooooooo" song... Which scary enough my 3y/o daughter knows and says whenever she sees the Y  If we could just figure out how to erase consumer minds  I wonder who the next leader is... according to my logs Yahoo is the second runner up... so I guess we'll see...
yahoo is definitely not giving up. and lets not forget msn! when does microsoft just give up and walk away? they are announcing their engine will be ready in 2005. gates admitted that google beat them and now they are ramping up. search will be integrated in the os!
If MSN could acquire Google, it will look something like this: Mail: Yahoo vs. MSN Portal: Yahoo vs. MSN ..and Search: Yahoo (AV, ATW and Ink) vs. MSN (Google and MSN's own search engine) will be funny then :) but this probably won't happen, I think it will end up looking like this: Mail: Yahoo vs. MSN Portal: Yahoo vs. MSN Search: Yahoo (AV, ATW and Ink) vs. MSN (MSN's own search engine) vs. Google. In other words, AV vs. ATW vs. MSN vs. Ink vs. Google (I was only stating the major's in the post)
It's possible that Yahoo may also try to promote either Altavista or AllTheWeb. Not likely, but possible.
Some of the reactionary whining will be stopping soon. Seems like Google has removed their filter.
yep, that one stopped. But, it seems that theres another one which just began: http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/21932.htm http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/21949.htm http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/21994.htm And also, a major news, Google have now updated their index page: [quote:e22a0b7c1e]©2004 Google - Searching 4,285,199,774 web pages[/quote:e22a0b7c1e] at the bottom of google.com thats quite a jump, now, when we say "Google's 3 billion database" , we'll actually be meaning "Google's 4 million database."
Yeah it is. The Yahoo results are flickering on and off. The www2 and www3 results have been there all day. Yahoo may be geo-targeting.
