ok so I type the filenames xyz.htm or /xyz.htm/ also, if I put a seperate line User-agent: google.com only google would pay attention to it? Do I need a line in the meta tags?

no you don't want to use meta tags. the robots.txt is the filename. you can make it in notepad or wordpad on windows. then save it to your desktop and upload it to the your server in the root directory.

Does any search engine acknowledge the use of Meta Tags anymore??

Meta-tags are passe I would have to say. They don't amount to much.

Don't a lot of search engines actually require metatags to be listed? Or is that just a rumor...?
