best CD/R for long term storage of date?
good topic eden!
i wish i had more input to add but i've been using the imation ones the whole time. i bought them at compusa. now i'm worried.
Hi Edwin
Well...what can I say? On the one hand I have been advised that CD/R's vary from one batch to the next, but I bought my Imation CD/R's over a period of a year from the same supplier, but I'me not quick to condemn any manufacturer, rather I just speak as I find.
I do have two pieces of software...one no longer available...they are very small apps...about 1MB the pair of them...one is called CD Identifier, which is a tiny standalone, which after you place a cd in your rom drive, will tell you what dye was used to make it and also the manufacturer, this is the only app of it's kind that I am aware of, though there may well be others ( I shall Google for it after this post) though as the software is no longer being developed it may be that as time passes it will not recognise the newer makes of CD, still useful now though.
The other is an app called CD Check that gives you a warning of any errors on your CD and attempts to fix them I should be happy to email them to you if you feel they would be of any use. ISO Buster is supposed to be very good when it comes to salvaging inaccessible disks.
I have a good many informative links on this subject, which I will post when I have the time.
I'me actually a book/paper conservator and have a strong interest in the archiving of digital information, I cannot help but feel that this subject should be of concern to anyone who places material on a CD/R believing it will still be there in several years time, as I know from my own experience that...It aint necessarily so!
Best Wishes
Eden
Regarding Imation CD/R's....I have found out quite a lot about them...apparently according to a review ...(cannot find source unfortunately) Imation (if made by Tayo Yuden Company Ltd) are "quality cd/r's but if branded the same but made by CMC magnetics Corp are of a "much" lower quality. It may be that I had the "much lower" quality ones?
The site below has a lot of info about Imation

That's quite a report Eden! Thanks for sharing it.

The people at office depot said that a CD-R was a CD-R and I got the cheapest ones.... this is news to me!
