Ive got 5 on the main page now...there anywheres between 8k and 16k
Sounds like a pretty decent job. As long as the image files are served on the same server, load times should be decent.
Got it down by compressing some files to 39 secs on home page....most other pages so far are 10 secs or under. hey web...could ya explain about the need for fast load time? is it just for your viewers sake or does it come into play with SE's? I wasn't sure if maybe a spider would time-out after so long and move on.
It's primarily for the users but it also helps SEO a bit. There are still a huge number of dialup users out there so they're the main focus. Most pages that are 60K or under are fine from what I can see.
I believe that 35k is a good webdesign practice, and I always preffer less.
the magic number often quoted is 50k, but of course the smaller and faster the better: there is no *rule*. it depends a bit on the site audience as well, and whether some images are cached (e.g. logo, masthead) and if you have lots of smaller graphics sprinkled through lots of real text then users can read as they wait for any pictures to download. 35k is a good target but it's on the lean side for many sites. it really depends a lot on what your users will wait for. obviously for something like an art gallery then you can get away with a bit longer. you also make pages further into the site a little larger as by then users are already in your site and interested by that time, but it still needs to be a balance!
yeah, page type matters a lot! educational and informational sites you want really fast, but on a webgame site like mine, the content is most important. game people are willing to wait for flash games and cool effects, but not the person looking for some quick info.
