What do you do to build a successful, profitable website?

You need a business plan. A real sustainable one.

That is sure to be something you would want to have no matter what business you are in. Maybe that is the main reason places, both real and on the internet fail? If you don't have a "mission", you don't have a plan. If there is no plan, it leaves you unfocused. If you can't focus on what you are doing it leaves you distracted. When you are distracted, it might lead you to make mistakes that cost you?

You know what else you want: High revenues and low expenses. We know it seems obvious but probably not to everyone. If you plan on marketing a product online you need to make sure that the marketing costs aren't out of control.

But you also need to market a product that is actually selling. Many people gravitate towards arenas which have low barriers to entry. The more people who enter, the fiercer the competition. The fiercer the competition, the more likely you are to see the industry enter into a price war and to also see commodization. Almost all technology lends itself to being copied easily and more cheaply. With so much competition for so little money, what products can truly be sold profitably online?

We have focused on lesser known products. We spend a lot les on CPC search engines and we are ranked much higher in normal engines.

that's probably an excellent idea j. but do the products with less competition have strong demand?

Ease of use is always a good idea. At least if you have an online business, it requires very little overhead. Your market is anyone that finds you. Has anyone here had success with affiliate plans?

I know someone who does very well with both outgoing and incomming affiliate programs... Success ... Its all in the product... thats the one thing you need ... The traffic, marketing, SEO, etc.. all are just a means to get there.. you can bring the world to a site and unless you have a good product you'll do badly...

There is a lot less demand. But, we tried Dish Network once. We paid $1.00 to 2.00 click. The best ranking we ever had for "dish network" is right now at 15 in MSN and Yahoo. We spent more on CPC then we got sales because it is the same thing everybody else sells. Now we have several UGLY websites soon to be combined into one hughe website. When we started we had a couple sales a month, than $100 per day than 500 per day than 1000 per day. Our garage floor site only gets about 250-300 uniques a day, but the cost is cheap, and people buy, because they can't walk into Home Depot and buy.

wow! sounds like you guys are doing great! i like the programs with higher payouts!

Thanks for everyones input :) I am trying to come up with some ideas for ways to make more money on the internet, I was thinking about offering an E book, but I am unsure as to what the demand would be or how to price it. I know that a lot of websites offer these for free, but I also see that other web authors are offering E Books at Amazon (and their own websites) for a charge. Any thoughts?

My advice would be to ind a manuacturer with an original product looing for someone with web know how to sell it

that is good advice! like a real unique niche with high profits! i'm thinking now. my wheels are spinning.

solar powered flashlights automatic widgets winning lotto tickets sound good to me

hmm. i could approach manufactures who have little or no web presence and offer them a profit share for any web income. the market for backwards companies is still huge!

Thanks for all of your ideas. :) It is a big internet out there. So finding a niche is a good idea. Finding several niches would be even better! I know a guy that does the Dish TV shuffle, and his results aren't even worth mentioning! I don't think he's ever even made a sale!

If you can make $100 per sale then an affiliate program could add up quick. But there's a lot more competition.

affiliate programs... we make 110 per sale selling Dish network, but the CPC is high

how do you handle the tracking? the visitor hits a page on your site and the clicks off to them?

I've heard of hi-jacked affiliate sales getting diverted into the wrong hands. :?:

yeah. hijackers steal the affiliate code and rip off the affiliate!

Hijackers are a big thing in the world of affiliate sales.. there are a lot of programs out there that do "hide linking" .. so that people can't steal the link unless they put SERIOUS effort into it... http://www.affiliatestar.com is one that one of my programmers did... when we relaunch in a few months we're going to promote it... Its a handy little program...

Cool. I'll have to take a look into it. :) I was heard that online sales have boosted over 25% Good time to be on the internet!

It's a great time to be on the Web. I saw the same thing on CNN concerning the increase of e-commerce sales by 25% growth for one quarter! That's a yearly rate of 100%. Any business which is doubling every year is one worth getting into.

Online is the place to be. Why would you want to have anything smaller than a global market for the products and/ or services that you offer? It certainly leaves the dooe open for a lot of money making opportunities..that is for sure :)

Sites that sells well have this in common: 1. Well designed, easy to use, fast loading that even a child could find their way around. Don't ever assume that all people buying the stuff over the net are tecchies. 2. An ordering mechanism that is simple and logically arranged so that the buyer does not see barriers to making a purchase. 3. Dont use Flash/Splash pages unless its absolutely vital to your conquest. Not everyone has Pentium 4 / G5 Macs. 4. A good referral network. If Microsoft, Apple and Amazon uses referall networks, then you can, and should. 5. Once you publish the site, constant advertising, constant marketing and first class comebacks on emails (within 1 hour) prefereably. 6. If your product is an asthma health product, then hang around in asthma forums online, and see what people REALLY want. You dont have to build a new mousetrap, just one the mice like. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising. 7. You need a product which is is novel to your part of the world. ie: sell things that cant be gooten easily in your part of the world. 8. Form alliances with other non-competing products: eg: if you sell flowers online, link up with a person who sells chocolates. So if somebuys flowers, give them the option to buy choccies as well. It is a complementary product and you should have a link on the chocolate site. No cost and twice the chance of making a sale. Most important, service you clients as if they were the best in the world. Word of mouth. Its powerful. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. You make a lot of valid points :)

All well said and definitely easier said than done.

What if there aren't many other forums to hang out at? Then you just have to do all of the other things I would guess..
