Why in God's Name are there so many Webhosts?

Stability. Have you seen the Geocities add that says "Joe's webhosting" in an old neon sign, and then the sign flickers out? It's really true. Some hosts are down half the time. Same with domain name forwarding services... Then there's price :) and the n00b trying to find something cheap (with no quality in mind) v. big corperation factor and the normal people just trying to find something that works for a small bussiness or something. Differant hosts try and do bussniness for differant catagories of people. You guys all agree with that?

man they are like robots. they come and post these offers. every day another million webhosts hit the scene. stability is probably one thing. but many of these guys are dsl connections and don't have a clue what's going on. how much money can there really be in a field with this many competitors?

we use http://www.christianwebhost.com We have a third party checking our up time and it is very rare if ever that one our sites go down. They are real affordable and their support is awesome.

i actually think almost all the hosts are pretty stable. ones ive used over the years never go down much. i think its just a matter of preference. sometimes you like the name or something about the package they offer. who knows? at some point the national players will eat them all up. i see national ads for register.com and yahoo.com in almost all publications. the business is well suited to consolidation.

There are so many because its easy to get space on a server and that makes people believe "Poof .. I'm a webhost" ... If you watch a bunch of these "Fly By Night" ones that post all around.. they go down pretty fast.. because they don't realize the back end trouble and support that goes into it... IP Addresses, Tech Support, Security Updates, etc.. are all expensive and pains in the butts to monitor and keep up with....

i bet tech support eats them alive!

Actually Tech Support is where these "cheap" companies truly nail you.... Its where all their money comes from.. they charge you a fortune for standard tech support... There is no such thing as a free lunch... The cheap hosters have the same bills and costs as all the rest of us... they just choose where to nail the people .. you either get lousy customer service and support or you pay thru the wazzooo for it

[quote:d8b8316d8e="fpworld"]There is no such thing as a free lunch... [/quote:d8b8316d8e] We learned about that in econ, however, my teacher would be ashamed in you FPworld. TANSTAFL: There AINT no such thing as a free lunch It has to be aint ^-^ That teacher rocks. This is a tribute to Mr. Z, if he ever does a search for his name maybe he'll find this site. That would rock 8-) I hope the web hosts aren't eaten by the big companies.
