more and more people do these days. i am starting to see the "new economy" which was predicted years ago. online is a whole new world!


Too bad Genie can't arive to grant us all high hit counts! LOL I love my work, I love my friends I've made online .... But doesn't it get scary at what we can do with computers nowadays?? Does it scare anyone else that technology as the ability to go faster then any one can truly imagine?


i am not scared by it. but i am impressed. i am finally learning to accept change better than i used to. i used to be afraid to change anything. now i try to stay updated all the time and i try to stay ahead of the curve. there will always be more to learn with these computers.


Lucky you.. Sometimes technology scares me.. It grants too many idiots too many abilities... and yet at the same time... it can do so much good for so many people... Amazing how confusing that can get!


security has to be the biggest growing field in the future. someone has to protect people from themselves. unleashing newbies on the internet with dedicated 24 hour per day connections, no firewalls and no common sense, is bound to be trouble.


Case in Point: The awesome jump in sales for programs like Norton Anti Virus.... I get about 10 emails a day from friends asking "is this real" .. all the hoaxes are stupid! Before you repost hoaxes - Check if they are real... go to: http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/

Think of it this way... Technically we are all here supporting each other thru work, and friendship... If this was RL - and we were coworkers... We'd all be seeing each other daily... So whats the big deal? It isn't a test to see who is the best looking, noone is going to beg to have the pic removed... Its so we can put a face to the post, we will know who we are talking to and learning from and sharing with....

What program are you using?? if its not PSP 7+.. get it!! I will show you how to make them smaller without screwing them up

Is there anyway you can download PSP here - http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/ Free for a month... and its the best.... but you have to fix a couple settings in it once downloaded... or it gets pixalated <sp?>

Sorry everyone... No.. I didn't get hit too bad with the hurricane.. Had some downed wires and stuff... but nothing to dramatic.... It was my step-daughters 8th bday party yesterday.. so my house was full all day and evening (slumber party) and couldn't come on... :) So nope..I'm Ok.. I'm back.. and I'm staying ahead! :P

I actually went through and verified my html, xhtml, and css for a page, and that alone fixed multiple problems I was having with crossbrowser viewing. When I was sucked into Mr. Globalism Gates' monopoly back in the day I never worried about that stuff, but until you have the ability to view your page from different aspects, you normally don't. Now that I am using Linux I am constantly aware of things that DON'T display right in IE, but DO in other browsers, and Visa Versa. It's a pain but when you get done making sure your page looks identicle, besides maybe fonts, in IE, Mozilla, Konqueror, Opera and Safari, it's one hell of a nice feeling ;)[/code]

You can definitely tell it's a holiday. Everything is slow except the stores. Yesterday morning they showed 700 people who lined up at 5am outside a WalMart. They were selling DVD players for $29! They sold out in 10 minutes.


Circuit City had 32" really nice TV's on sale for $199 yesterday... i imagine they sold out pretty quick too... Everything around here was competing to open earlier ... I don't think one store opened after 6:30am ... and diners and stuff were opening at 4:30am... *shakes head* Nothing could be powerful enough for me to go shopping yesterday! LOL


the day i get up at 4am because i'm excited about a sale at walmart is the day i give it up. :P

Imagine that. The sanctity of a sale item over the sanctity of a human life. What is with people. And come on! For $29 you know that DVD player ain't that great :)


I bought a $50 one a few months back... It doesn't play the harsh copywrited DVD's (ie: DISNEY) ... and within 2 months of having it.. it quit playing around 60% of my other DVD's... I can only imagine what this wonderfully $29.00 DVD player does... Especially for those with bad Karma... I don't think any of those people trampling that poor woman earned any Karma points... half of those players probably don't work now :lol:


Bad Karma and a crappy cheap DVD player! Now that is a scary combination.

Staying on top of Google is never a bad resolution :) Did your daughter get a flu shot at all? I'm glad to hear that her doctor has upgraded her condition. There were a bunch of kids out in Colorado that died from it. That is some pretty scary stuff. So I'm happy to hear all is well :) Pretty funny how Care Bears are making a comeback. I remember there being a shortage of them back in the 80's. If you would held on to them from your childhood you'd be set.


This flu thing is out of control. I don't get it. What's so different nowadays that you would get the flu so easily?


funny it's called a 'virus' It's the same way that a virus on the internet morphs, gets smarter and adapts to it's environment to infect more computers. Only it does this to humans. Is pennecillan (sp) even used to treat the flu anymore? I would think it helps even less as we treat more and more symptoms with it..

In real life and on the internet. I was watching the news last night and there was a 6 month old baby that just died symptoms of the flu. It's hard to believe that the flu is bad enough to kill people, and very sad to hear. Keep healthy everyone, and stay diligent in your fight against viruses..

enjoy the weather while it lasts. this summer i am going to make a vow to get off my computer and go outdoors more. i didn't do much outdoors this summer and i regret it now. i am stir crazy! :P


It's never a bad idea to get outdoors whenever you can. If you get a nice day in the winter months, go for a walk or something. The fresh air always uplifts me and puts me in a better mood.


When I was a kid I didn't mind the Winter at all. Not even the bitter ones. Must be a matter of perspective. I have to admit, this winter hasn't even been a problem. I predict a short one and a nice long summer.


Last year for Christmas we got 30+ inches of snow... this year.. we've had a total since the beginning of winter of around 15.... ... I agree.. doesn't look like this year will be much of a winter.. but of course.. last time I said that I had a snow storm of 40+ inches in April... :lol:


you never know if the snow is coming back. it can. at any second.

Well.. Hopefully this time I wont be going away anymore... Remember that infection the ER said I had? ... Well I just got out of the hospital last night.. I've been there since Thursday... I called my doctor to get a less expensive antibiotic because the one the hospital gave me was around $20/pill... they told me they wanted to see me...on Thursday and immediately sent me right to a surgeon who then rushed me into emergency surgery that evening... I apparently had a Ventricular <sp?> hernia ... which is one of the worse ones you can have... The surgeon was FURIOUS noone caught it in the 2 ER trips... I'm ok now.. 2 new scars and very sore... ordered to bed for a couple days (thank goodness for laptops!) but I'm ok now... hopefully no more ER trips anytime soon... *sigh*


Hope you feel better! I haven't been to a hospital for any major illnesses or anything since I was a wee baby. I had a seizure or something, but guess I was never the same since then! ;)

How much do you think the internet is going to change between now and then. Think HTML will still be the standard? Or will we have somthing like: super complex no-longer mark up language. That's what I love about HTML, it's so easy i get into the webmaster stuff at age uh *ponders* 11 i think.


I prefer Opera. It is really good. Fast, plenty of features and good looking. What else do you need?


Methinks HTML still needs to be standardized (xhtml is getting there) before it can advance any further. If you keep adding to an unstandard system then everything ets further and further from repairable. HTML will maintain its popularity, but it will need to fall into standards for everyone. Sloppy HTML should just not be displayed properly, instead of Microshaft letting it slide in their browser. (and others of course). I think PHP will be the next major thing as well. It's compatibility with HTML is great, (if you can call it compatibility). Maybe interwoven aspects instead? Anyhoo, everything will work together in peaceful harmony, and work on all browsers.


Stricter enforcement of rules is interesting. But with the number of non-compliant websites out there, it would be a nightmare. People would be sure it was the browser that was broken.

Besides, some people dont have the time or money (if they hired somebody) to continually fix their website. You want to know it will work for a while if you leave it allone. Isn't that why HTML is special? Opera is OK, except my computer and it don't get allong very well.... I do use it to download stuff now that my IE is messed up and netscape won't even run. My computer is so old, and has a lode of stuff on it...


I use Mozilla in Linux and Opera in Windoze. All's good. All's good.


I always hated NetScape. Never even liked Mozilla. Years ago I read a report that said people almost always ended up using the program they learned first. That's why technology companies are always so interested in getting products out there first. However, if you're Microsoft, you can always release a product second, and just crush the competition.

I learned using "Integrator" back in the dos days. It was a rather nice menu based gui. I Moved on to bigger and better things, windows 3.1, then 95, and had been at 98 until I hated it so much that I switched to Linux. I love Linux, it is so much better then Windoze 98, and I think a lot of the lack of apps is compensated for not having to reboot twice a day, etc. I am getting used to GIMP to replace photoshop, and I am sure I'll be sticking around for quite some time. The only Linux GUI I've tried is Classic X and it's just a bit clunky and foreign to me. Of course this what Microsoft wants. I'm used to using XP and don't really want to be bothered to learn much that's new.


KDE is a great windows manager. I have tried Windows Maker and it seemed far more foreign then KDE does.

I bought my first copy of Windows 3.1 in 1990. It was available until at least 1994. Heyer may have been between 4 - 8 years old.


Lets see.. I used Integrator till probably 5 or six, then we bought a 486, which was whopping fast compared to the 286 and I'd imagine that one had 3.1 on it. So about five or six. I actually just dismantled the old AT tower a few months ago. That thing was a steel beast.

They know computers, but they introduced me to them when my brain was a sponge. So now I know a lot more then them. My dad is still prety knowledgable but mostly on the hardware side of things, his eyes have been blinded by microshaft.


the best time to learn computers is when you're young. as heyer said, you are a spone and take it all in. its tough teaching older folks and some people are even technology resistant.


Believe it or not: I still have a DOS machine that runs! A 286 :)


4 years ago I still had 486 with 8MB of ram and windows 95 :lol: 3 years ago I used AMD K-6 233MHZ with 32MB of ram and windows 98. Now I'm still using 1GHz with 512MB of ram and windows xp pro. It's time to move to a better machine but I get too attached to my computer :P and hate to let go and transfer all those files... :lol:

Yep, tried all of them including Linux, Lindows and BeOS and Windows ME is the worst out there. If it runs slow, it might be a good idea to install win 98, its more stable and much faster.


98 is getting pretty rank these days. at least grab a bootleg windows xp off someone and run that. but you should also dual boot into linux.


Edwin, he said that his computer runs slow on ME, do you really think XP will solve the problem? That's why I said 98 cause its faster and has lower requirements. There is another possibility: You have too much crap on your pc and you need to delete all of it and install new windows, should work much better. P.S. Windows ME is abismal, and we own Windows 98 so, maybe we should just install that. I dunno, we do have a lot of cr*p, but we have wiped it many MANY times...so that can't be it.

The only major difference between ME and 98 is the "new interface". It was a new windows at some point and everybody including me rushed to try it. Turned out to be crap, so most of people I know switched either to 98 or 2000. I personally like 2000 much better cause its based on NT platform which is fast and stable. From what I understood, in your case your pc is slow so you need 98 because 2000 takes even more system resources then ME.


truth is, windows has always been slow and will always be slow. but it doesn't matter anymore because cheap machines are just so fast!


Windows ME is the quirkiest by far. They don't seem to recover well from crashes..

And how many are free for windows, probably about the same. Every program you NEED in windows can be found in an equal in Linux. Office - OpenOffice Photoshop - Gimp etc. etc. etc.


i don't care about programs. i care about applications and linux has that! oh boy does the boy called linux have that. free mysql. free apache. free php. you can build anything you want. and bill gates doesn't see a penny.

Yep, there is some kind of bug on the forum, I lost my avatar twice yesterday. I found a solution for the problem though. I uploaded my avatar on my server and then just linked to it without uploading it on web-mastery server. Seems to work...so far.


I have posted about that Bug before on NukeCops but haven't seen an answer. If I can patch it, I will.

I looked at some of your templates FPworld. They are very nice. Very good ideas, and loads cheaper than to get your page custom designed. I also finally realised why it's called FPworld...I'm so slow. :lol: I never really thought about buying templates as a viable way to get a good website. It seems like it could be a good way to go...maybe even for my church. *ponders*.

A lot of people have a bad tummy over templates.. because half the "designers" out there use boxed art (templates that are sold to numerous people cheap and sold over and over again).... We pride ourselves on NEVER using those.. a lot of my repeat clients are actual webdesigners who purchase custom templates and sell them to their clients as full websites for 4-10x more then what they paid for them... We've done a few brand new church ones that have gone over incredibly .. and are super popular (gave me 10 custom jobs so far in the last month) .. Give me a call or send a pm with your number and either I or Barb will call you and give you the links to the sites and you can show them to your church... :)


We're a small church and everybody except for me is happy with the site i designed. I'm moving the host and I guess our membership expired with geocities and now we have a little ad again. I am moving it onto my website's host though on the no-ad program I'm allready paying for. Whatcha think? www.harvestbiblefellowship.org ps. it came out pretty good considering the pastor wanted a bright blue background :-D he designes the buletins. It took a while to get him to see that paper and websites are differant :). Im still not sure he's convinced.

Most people have a lot of trouble realizing that RL (real life) differs from IL (internet life) .. I suffer thru the whole "I want this" concept on a daily basis.. and most of the time they get convinced.. others its a fight... People know what they want, its just a matter of convincing them that what they want doesn't always work... The sites not bad.. :) Let me know if you ever consider changing it.. I've got a couple that are not "Industry Specific" that are on the lower level.. however I'm sure Barb will be willing to consider something if you do like our other churches and bring others to us... *shrug* She deals how she deals... I think moving it off Geocities is definantely a good idea.. especially if you are already paying for it.. As for the affiliate program.. thats simple.. It depends.. it doesn't hurt to try.. it doesn't cost you anything but space... I've had people with weird sites able to pull it off.. Just make sure you understand, I haven't gone thru your site very much.. I have to deny you if there are any other Template designers on your site.. Take a look at the rules.. if you don't mind what they say.. go for it.. sign up and send me a PM here letting me know when you did.. and we'll fix ya up :)

I'm from NY, not Manhattan itself but from Brooklyn, one of its 5 borrows. It's cold here too :( but there are some good looking women here :D. As you know it's one of the biggest cities in the world so it's not too boring here. Although the myth that this city never sleep is not true...try hanging out in the city at 4AM and you'll know what I'm talking about :wink:. I would give anything to move to Manhattan (right now I live about 40 min from downtown Manhattan with traffic) but it's just too expensive for me right now. I'm renting one bedroom apartment with a friend and it costs me just $900!! for rent alone. In Manhattan the same, maybe even smaller apartment, will cost me $2,500 so there is no point.


You really need to get to know Jay-Z. If he invited you to his parties you could meet some supermodels :)

That's one of the bugs in this version of the software. It sometimes can't parse html strings and then it doesn't return an error code. It's always best when the error code is clear.

I had to delete most all of my system folders and files to get rid of it, now i hope the stupid computer keeps working. Then after that i can't sign into this forum using IE anymore, so i'm using opera. And MSN I/M and E-mail hasn't been working right. *sigh* all at once! I had set my security to level high. That was all, I wasn't excepting your sites' cookies or something. Problem is resolved. Same with MSN. I tried to sign in using Opera, and it worked...that set the wheels turing ^-^ everything is fine, your site is not at fault.

I've never been to the falls, but I used to live by the lake. If the air was stinky, it was because of dead fish. Or mayflies. Those things are nasty. They only live for 24 hours and their whole purpose is to breed and die. They even put signs up warning drivers because they *crunch* under the weight of cars (or your foot) and turn roads slick.. Yes this is a true story.. they plow them out by the truckload.. and they smell like dead fish. Yuck.

A friend of mine bought that CD, I don't think he even got through it once. That is a risk that you take when you buy a CD, there might only be one or two songs that you like. I think that is why the "NOW" CD's do well, it has a bunch of popular songs on it so you aren't let down by the rest of the CD.

if mary will let me i plan to post some pictures of the night on my website, you guys will want to see. she really looked pretty. Her sister did her hair, and it took hours and hours and i believe them too! It's beautifull. Have you guys had as good a prom experience as i had?


well.... let me see we have things called grads (don't do that prom thing) anyway the saturday nite before mine which was on a friday me and a bunch of guys went out on the piss (as we do). went to a few pubs but only managed a few pints before we had to head cos our bus was booked for 12 o'clock (less drinking time...bad) anyway while we were waiting for the bus one of my friends decided HE wanted to stay out so tryed to cancel our bus. as some of the lads were underage they had to go home or thier mammies would be mad. I tryed to book a taxi for himself and myself as the nite was still young but as it was a busy nite i couldn't get one so i said f**k it we'll head, my friend who was after more drink the rest of us still wanted to stay on and was acting the prick so i tryed to tell him to "cop yourself on a small bit biy" only for him to lash out and hit me knocking me and i hit my head of a curb.......(fade to black) (fade up from black) i woke up in the morning and my bed was covered in blood i went to the mirror and there was blood all over my face too and my nose was Swollen any though every thing was grand but on monday decided that i should get it checked out so i went to my doctor who said i should get some X-rays... so after hours of waiting in the hospital i finally got my X-rays to find out I had a broken nose and a chiped cheek bone. so the following day i had to go to a different hospital to dee someone from the plactics department (i'm sure they better name for it). anyway i needed surgery which was due to be on the friday! bollocks! so friday comes and i go to the hospital only to find that they couldn't do me so I was told to come back monday. bollocks! so that night i went to the pub, thinking i should be some where else although my head was still trobbing so better of as night consists mainly of drinking drinking drinking until you get kicked out of the hotel. then you wait around the streets of the city in the early morning waiting for the early bars to open... in other words i didn't go to mine

*blink* um. no. however i think we both preserved our flowers... oh, i blew up my computer! the one i bought... it made me cry. i forgot to unplug it...i'm lucky to be allive. the floppy drive burned out, but everything else worked. then i decided to try and put in another power supply because i figured that was the problem since another floppy drive wouldn't, then it didn't work either, and the first power supply broke so i can't put the computer back together even without floppy. so then i tried hooking it up to an old MMX main board...now the other power supply quit working and the room still smells bad (so i probably killed the older main board to) ^-^;;(). So now i have one power supply left. i hope i didn't scramble that hard drive cause it had that nice microsoft office premium on it... and i do know how to install a hard drive...so if my dad will let me (fat chance after what i did to MY computer) i'll install it on this one. good thing the computer only cost me 40 bucks. still...that was a chunk of my 15 year old life savings. anybody wanna fly to colorado springs and help me rebuild it?

uhm, i think i could rebuild it except that the hard drive no longer works if i plug the data cable into it. :( it does spin when there's only power though... i hooked up a REALLY OLD 200 some meg. hard drive and it spun when i turned it on. oh well.

hey guys, i'm lookin' for an aplication that will tell me when i get a message on MSN or HOTMAIL w/out being singed in w/the MSN program? is that possible? cause that would be cool. i want it so bad.


i don't use msn but i thought that when you go online you would auto login or is that the messeger thing or is it the same. anyway wouldn't that tell ya when you get a messege.


i dont like MSN messinger. i only use AIM (since i booted trillian, it had problems). but yeah, i disabled MSN from turning on unless i asked it to.

back-packing for the first time in my life. with the distance runners of the school my parents *think* i'm going to next year ^-^. They are in shape! wow! we tried to climb a 14,000 some mountain, but when one girl sucumed to her fear of heights and the rest of us were dying (no trail, snow, rock patches and sometimes misplaced rocks etc.) we whent back at about 13,000. it was very fun! i enjoyed much. it did hail the first night up there, but very small. i think they called it gropple or something.

thanks all! i will be here some, its just i cant too often because of stupid dial up. i have friends who are helping me, but I think that I will just break into my house. it's my bloody house too. it's not like they can legally do this, i'll call the police if i have to. my parents are very strict Christians who have deviated from Biblical Christianity into setting up "fences" and rules that have nothing to do with the Bible. They've taken principles like "bad company corrupts good morals" and taken it to extreme. so, now anybody who doesnt agree with them (ie. not a Christian) is not allowed to asosiate with me. I told them i would do what i thought i had to and not be home during the day because i would be with real PEOPLE, and they kicked me out. Clearly the issue here is that my parents focus on what you cant do as a Christian and totally forget that Christianity is a religion of reaching out to others and loving them. it's mostly about what you DO not what you CANT DO although it's a part. if you have legal information on my situation that would help. AM i a runaway? I dont really want to end up handed over to the state, but this has to end. i'm effectively screwed enough people over who were trying to help me, and then one of my best friends stabbed my back and stole allll my mone (360 dollars). i guess i'm going home even if i have to call the cops *shrugs*. this goes against my nature and the whole "honor your parents" thing.


Hmm, sorry to hear all this, Ricky. I don't think breaking into your house is a very good idea. Even though you do or did live there, that is your mom and dad's house, not yours. In Canada, you could be charged with break and enter even if it's your parent's house. If you call the police and your parents still don't want you to move back in, I am pretty sure they can't force them to take you and you may end up as a ward of the state. I don't know what the legal age is in the US but in Canada you can be on your own at 16 so the police won't interfere after you've reached that age since you would be considered an adult. My suggestion would be to try and compromise with your parents. Talk things over with them and try to get them to give a little and you give a little in exchange, that kinda thing. in the US you CAN get emancipated at 16 if you have a steady job and can aford a place to stay on your own AND your parents CONCENT AND the court considers it in your best interest. I dont think i have any of those things. besides, if my parents tried to screw me over by calling the cops on my for breaking in, they would be busted for kicking me out when i'm under their protection. They CANT call the cops on me, and I CAN call on them should i choose to do so. I could end up getting turned over to state, but hey, *shrugs* we shall see.


RickyJo, I would be careful how you play your cards now. Your parents definitely have control over their house and the belongings in it. I think they might react poorly to anything underhanded you do. You aren't in a great position to negotiate. At times like that you "Play Ball". What you need to do is bury the hatchet them with now. Then you strengthen your position and make plans for the future. You can check out the appropriate laws and take appropriate action. I moved out of my house when I was 16. The feeling was mutual with the parents and I went to college, so it was no big deal. If you play your cards right you can get your independence quicker than by launching an ill-conceived war.


Heya Ricky.. Take a second to breathe and think things out a little bit. I don't think that being a ward of the state is what you really want! Don't break into the house. If your parents are level headed, maybe sit down and have a talk with them instead. I know it sounds corny, but if everything has been happening in an emotionally charged environment, it will be ruled by emotions, if you know what I mean. Let them talk and listen to what they have to say, and ask them to do the same for you. Stay away from name calling (..but you already know that one :) ) and yelling. It doesn't help. Tell them how you feel. See if you can't work something out temporarily. Then you can find out about what rights you have. If this is *mainly* about going to school, I would have to think that if you wanted to go, that *legally* your parents would have to let you go. I haven't checked that anywhere, but as an American, I think thta it would be your right.. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, kiddo :)

Your best bet is to get back home, no one can hurt you, your parents are not going to lock you up forever, by law they are responsible for you until you are of legal age, they can be charged with crimes for what you do until you are a legal adult. You should get back home ASAP, even if the police have to give you a ride back home if you have no money. Get back in school, you can meet people there, get your education, then when you are of age, get a job like Edwin told you. Just like BK told you, you have no real legs to stand on here. So get back home and listen to your parents until you have the opportunity to get out on your own. That is your best option.

Just an FYI... In most states, but it does vary, especially in the deep south (and some places in PA)... 16 is considered a child. Some states consider you an adult and legal to marry, live, etc...! Your parents have technically broken the law (in SOME states.. again.. depends where you are)... and at the same time if you don't report them... they can declare you a runaway if they get a burr up their butt and change their minds... Options.... Contact DSS (Department of Social Services) tell them the story and ask them what would happen... If I were you I'd have a plan long before calling.. Where are you going to stay, eat, etc... if you end up a ward of the state, even for 2 years.. its not that fun! But at 16... if you had a place to stay that was safe, food, job, etc.. they MAY just say forget it... and at least you have a record of what happened... It costs a lot of money, and takes a lot of work to do emancipation... and at your age, I cannot guarantee its worth it.. unless you were potentially going to end up a ward of the state. Thats why i dont play stratagy games. Take to much time. I like unreal because its fast & you can sate your competitive edge in about 10 minutes. I prefer playing people and i like over LAN internet gaming is crap, 2 much lag and i prefer meeting the people im playing. I used to live in an internet cafe so I got fairly good, spent all my time surfing, designing, gaming & other stuff.

there are a few hundered pro/semi pro gamers out there, I dont know if im at there level but i got to the stage in unreal where i could play online in some of the most competitive arenas on a 56K with a 16MB graphics card on a laptop with a touch pad & still win. I also got to the stage where when LAN playing I just used the translocator and could play & kill the best players in webworkhouse while talking on the phone. Thats Unreal Tournament though. I got to use a net cafe in cork called webworkhouse for free for a couple of years and I used to spend 10 hours a day in there at stages. Never been beaten at UT. if people still played the original unreal in gamer comps i would probably apply. Im only average at counterstrike though (I hate it, its to slow).

The Boomtown Rats were an Irish rock band that scored a series of British hits between 1977 and 1980, and were led by singer Bob Geldof, who organized the Ethiopian relief efforts Band Aid and Live Aid. The Rats were formed in Dun Laoghaire, near Dublin, Ireland, in 1975 by Geldof (born Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof, October 5, 1954, Dun Laoghaire, Ireland), a former journalist; Johnnie Fingers (keyboards); Gerry Cott (guitar); Garry Roberts (guitar); Pete Briquette (bass); and Simon Crowe (drums). They took their name from Woody Guthrie's novel Bound for Glory. The group moved to London in October 1976, and became associated with the punk rock movement. Signing to Ensign Records, they released their debut single, "Lookin' After No. 1," in August 1977. It was the first of nine straight singles to make the U.K. Top 40. Their debut album, The Boomtown Rats, was released in September 1977, on Ensign in the U.K. and on Mercury in the U.S. Their second album, Tonic for the Troops, appeared in June 1978 in the U.K., along with their first U.K. Top Ten hit, "Like Clockwork." In the fall, "Rat Trap" from the album hit number one. A Tonic for the Troops was released in the U.S. on Columbia Records in February 1979 with two tracks from The Boomtown Rats substituted for tracks on the U.K. version. The Boomtown Rats' second straight U.K. number one came in the summer of 1979 with "I Don't Like Mondays," a song inspired by a California teenager who had gone on a killing spree and glibly justified her action with the title line. It was contained on the Rats' third album, The Fine Art of Surfacing, released in October 1979, and subsequently became the band's only U.S. singles-chart entry. The album also contained their next U.K. Top Ten hit, "Someone's Looking at You." The Boomtown Rats released their final U.K. Top Ten hit, "Banana Republic," in November 1980, followed by their fourth album, Mondo Bongo, in January 1981. At this point, guitarist Gerry Cott left the group, and they continued as a quintet. Their fifth album, V Deep, was released in the U.K. in February 1982. In the U.S., Columbia initially released only a four-song EP drawn from the album The Boomtown Rats, finally releasing the full LP in September, when it failed to chart. Also in 1982, Geldof starred in the movie Pink Floyd: The Wall. Columbia released the six-song compilation Ratrospective in March 1983, but rejected the band's newly recorded sixth album, In the Long Grass, which was released by Ensign in England. In 1984, Geldof and Midge Ure wrote "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and organized the star-studded Band Aid group to record it for Ethiopian relief, resulting in the biggest selling single in U.K. history. Geldof then went on to organize the two Live Aid concerts, held on July 13, 1985, in London and Philadelphia. Geldof's increased visibility led to the belated U.S. release of In the Long Grass, but when it failed to chart, the Boomtown Rats were left without a record label. Actually it was mon, tue & wensday. its only 4:30 here on thursday, give me a couple of hours. Oh yeah the coffe. get a big cup, a medium size nodge and a small pack of strawbery flavour carbohydrate powder, find the finest coffe you can, columbian preferably and a shot and a half of irish whiskey. crumble nodge, mix everything else in, serve hot and prepare for impact.
