i will let you know. i submitted this site yesterday. i use Yahoo myself and i know it will help in a couple ways. 1) you get PR from your Yahoo link 2) if you use keywords right you get a boost in the Google-based Yahoo results 3) you get traffic from the directory itself now it really depends on the number of visitors you get. $299 for a year costs you .81 cents per day for traffic. chances are that you will recoup those costs.
I think it is not as important as it used to be. If you are a non commercial site you can still get a free listing in certain categories.
It is my understanding the 299 is just a garuntee of your site getting your site looked at by yahoo within 7 days. It doesn't even mean that you will be included in the directory just that they'll look at it before they look at the people's sites who did not pay. If you suggest your site in yahoo's directory without paying it can take around 3 months. That is what I've done, if you're skeptical about paying the 299 just submit and wait a few months, maybe you'll get in without paying. It is my opinion that yahoo is VERY important. Only beacuse they are the #1 most popular website that exists.
yahoo has always been my start page. i would imagine a lot of others tend toward this engine. excluding most AOler's. they seem to be off in their own little world out there. some have never left the AOL menu system..
i guess we'll find out if its worth it soon. i got the letter i'm accepted and they said it will appear in 24 to 48 hours.

nothing dramatic. looks like about 10 uniques a day.
at that rate it is costing .008 cents per lead. if it goes down much, that sort of sucks.
that would suck. but on the bright side, it is a PageRank 6 page that i am linked from. that should help :)
Just for the pr link, I think it's worth the money. But, Then again, I run a business class site. I doubt I would ever spend the cash on a personal site. You can spend allot of time trying to link to relevant good ranking sites.
i think the PR 6 link is worth it also. plus, with a bit of creativity, i can probably earn the $299 back at some point. i would really like to add a DMOZ PR6 with the yahoo listing, but they haven't hooked me up yet.
i checked the results for a couple searches today: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=webmaster+community&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-top number 2 for "webmaster community" and number 12 for "webmaster forums". both of those are from the anchor text in the Yahoo directory listing. I tried to pump more keywords in there but they edited the description. now the free traffic from those two phrases will have to be counted, but it places even more value on the $299 payment.
from yahoo, those spots go up like 5 positions. i wonder if thats because of the PR of if they place greater emphasis on the keywords in the Yahoo description?
probably the description. they're highlighted in bold when the results come up.
I've seen the same results.. I've always believed it was the description as well. But, it would be nice to know for sure.
i think it's the description, also. if it was pagerank, the google results would the same. seems like yahoo takes the google results almost verbatim, and then runs them through a final directory of their filter. it seems like google uses DMOZ the same way.
I think it depends on the type of listing that you get. If you are a small B&B in a small village, it's probably not worth it as you'll be in such a low level category. If you have a more general website that can achieve a higher level in the category hierarchy, then I think there is some potential and merit in the fee. Aaron
I got accepted in Yahoo around 20 hours ago and I have had 86 unique visitors just from the New Additions page! I am very impressed so far with the Yahoo traffic.
very impressive, link-pimp. let us know if it keeps up.
180 uniques so far! Maybe they think its an adult site because of the name.
that's a fairly heavy load! nice work. i think "pimpin'" is just popular these days :)
