i want to start a website

OK. What you need to do is set up a hosting account and get an IP address. I use http://www.christianwebhost.com Then you need to use your design program to publish it to the web. Sounds easy ;-)

you will need an ftp program too.

Or you can use www.freewebs.com. that way you don't need FTP or anything. It's free with no ads. Asuming the site isn't monsterously huge it will work great! If you want me to explain in detail i'd be happy to :)

I am having the same question. I have a site created, and even have the domain name purchased. I have no clue how to post the site though. I am using all of the Adobe Products for my building. Can anybody help?

:welcome Have you purchased a hosting account yet? If so, who is it through?

Here is what I DO have....I created a mock up of a site to be released soon. I also bought the domain name....thats ALL i have. I need to know how to get it on the net so when I go to www.whatever it goes to the site. Thanx

all you need now is the hosting account. there are a ton of hosting offers in the offers and requests forums. you can get an account pretty cheap.

if you dont know how to use a FTP program it is just as effective to use an upload on a good host. PS. where did you register your domain and does it have free URL forwarding?

If you are looking for some affordably hosting to get online, check out iPowerWeb It is 7.95 a month, and it even has a built in upoading system. Along with a LOT of various plugins. But they are what I use, and I have really enjoyed them alot! :)

if your website is not too large, freewebs.com offers uploading and is only ten dollars a year. however, bandwith is a bit limited. I forget the number, but you can check out the specs. I like freewebs, it works well. very inexpensive

so wait...i have to buy the domain name, AND on top of it buy a web host??

yep. those are the main things you need. the domain is registered and that means people can find it from somewhere on the internet. the domain name resolves to an address. that address is the address of the server. the server is the space that is hosted by a hosting provider. there are a number of companies that will offer a free domain with a hosting account.

it also depends, if you aren't picky you don't have to pay for either. www.freewebs.com, www.geocities.com are free hosts. They also give you URLs, but they aren't your own domain. it would be like: www.freewebs.com/yoursitesname

in fact, i worked with only free stuff for years.

always best to take what you can get!

i think free is the ideal price

It all depends. Sometimes free is not a value.

can't lose anything.

you can always lose something. opportunity costs!

dang it edwin. you aren't supposed to show me up :(

In business it is all about how you present yourself. Here you can't really see the face, except maybe Edwin's , so usually for online based company their site is their face. Naturally you want to look like a million bucks when you go to the meeting so why would you go ahead to ruin the first impression of your business with free server. Of course free servers can always be used for personal needs and/or testing but for business I think its unprofessional.

Good call DesignVelocity. Even though the saying goes the best things in like are free, sometimes they aren't. If you have a web based business, it is worth putting at least a bit of money to your livelihood... and if you are successful, the few costs associated with being successful are well worth it :) and most times it isn't that much money anyhow.

As life goes and and you gain more experience you become less price concious. Or I should say, some people do. Quality matters more and more.

i wish i became less price conciouse, then i assume i would have money to be unconciouse about?

There is only so much you can do with 100 dollars in your budget. Of course you might have heard about famous people that started with 1 dollar in their pocket and it might be true but they are one in the billion. Truth is you can sell **** if you know how to advertise it and have large enough budget to do it.

 ebay!

8O hi all iam so new to all this . but i want to build a web site aswell and i really do not have a clue as wot to do .. will this site help me ?? if not can any of you think of i site i could use please .. oh and by the way iam a old chick .. so could also be a bit thick .. haha oh well the truth never did hurt .. many thanx gilly x x  P

you need a program to design your website and you need a web host to host it. those are the two things you need.
