Database questions

is it mysql?

hmmm, this is the stuff of which my dad knows.

Yes...i can use MySQL it says...i have no clue what that does for me...i know once before I had to send a guy a database built in ms excel i believe and he built a form to query it and show results. This is the kind of thing i want to do. Seems like I should be able to put a database on the server and use a form with a drop box type navigation to fetch results from the database and also a form to let people enter their own info into the database into my certain fields? This is a learning experience for me...so basicaly right now im clueless. What Ive got is a database of hunting leases..with fields sorted by county name...contact, phone number , price , acreage etc. I'd like for someone to be able to search it by location via a drop down menu and see results or be able if they have a lease to add..they could add their info into it via filling out a form. Ive read that most servers with frontpage extensions work with databases made using MSAcess. Would it seem possible for me to put the database file on the server and build a form to show results from it and input data to it? Even if I could just get it to show results from it...i guess it wouldnt be too big a deal to update the database myself weekly on the server if it's not possible to let people input their info into it directly. Somebody point me in the right direction if you have a better idea than me. Which would be about any idea at all. Hehe. This is probably over my head and a bigger deal than i think. Im o.k. with form building if i just new how to get the database in the right spot and how to make it input stuff and not just fetch results all at the same time.

I would definitely suggest using the MySQL and Php combination unless you are at least internmediate VB programmer. The reason is the free stuff (MySQL and Php) is much bette and the only reason I can see to use Access and ASP is a pre-existent knowledge of VB/VBA (so you will be on a steep learning curve). Tobegin with, go to the MySQL website, download, install and play with the database in the commnad mode. Add the Php and forms as the next step. Hope it helps.

i think those are some good recommendations. the php and mysql apps always have a lot of support forums!
